The role of Harcourt Fenton Mudd in Star Trek: New Voyages, to be scripted by longtime Star Trek writer Howard Weinstein (story), will be played by popular recurring Trek guest star J.G. Hertzler.

The New Voyages web site made the announcement that Hertzler - who played Martok on Deep Space Nine and made guest appearances as different characters on both Voyager and Enterprise - would take on the role of the space pirate, swindler and thief who caused trouble for Captain Kirk in the original and animated Star Trek series.

"It will be a hoot to embody the ol' privateer...Harry Mudd is a cross between a giant Ferengi and a gypsy king," said Hertzler, will also direct the episode, "The Sky Above, The Mudd Below."

Producer James Cawley, who said that shooting would commence after other key roles were cast, added, "J.G. has a great sense of humor and I know he will make a great Harry Mudd...it takes a special actor to recreate the role of one of the greatest thorns in Captain Kirk’s side."

Hertzler is no stranger to fan productions of Star Trek. He has a role in the upcoming Of Gods and Men as well.
