The Paramount publicity campaign for Enterprise is steadily continuing, as the studio allowed the Los Angeles UPN affiliate to film a special behind-the-scenes segment on the set of the new Star Trek show. The feature gave viewers the first in-uniform look of six of the seven main crew members.

UPN 13 in Los Angeles aired the feature as part of its evening news program, airing after the nationwide UPN showing of 'Unimatrix Zero.' The LA station has been very active in promoting Enterprise, for instance already placing billboards through the city (story).

The segment itself included several of the same comments made by Scott Bakula (Jonathan Archer) to 'Entertainment Tonight' (story), but also included a look at an actual shooting session of Enterprise. A digitised clip of the newscast is now available for download, but first here is a full transcript for those lacking the available bandwidth:

[Hoshi Sato is shown on monitor behind the UPN Newsreader.]
UPN Newsreader: "Tonight: Scott Bakula preparing to take control of the starship Enterprise. He'll star in a prequel to the four Star Trek series airing here on UPN 13 this fall. It's aptly titled, 'Enterprise.'"

Archer: (talking to Hoshi Sato off-screen) "Suit up, Ensign."
Sato: (off-screen) "Me, Sir?"
[Mayweather looks around at Archer.]
Archer: "You're in charge 'til I get back."
[Archer leaves the bridge.]

THE YEAR: 2151. A HUNDRED YEARS BEFORE THE ORIGINAL STAR TREK VOYAGE EVER BEGAN. IN THE CAPTAIN'S CHAIR THIS TIME AROUND - SCOTT BAKULA OF QUANTUM LEAP FAME.

[Archer can be seen through the director's monitor. T'Pol is sitting down in the background behind a console.]

Bakula (off-screen): "I'm the first captain of the first starship to go out into space."

Bakula: "There will be - there's surprises. What's really fun about this, is because it is ahead of Kirk and Spock, there are references to things, that if you've seen the show, you'll get a kick out of."

LIKE THE ORIGINAL SERIES AND THREE OTHER SPIN-OFFS, ENTERPRISE IS ALSO LOADED WITH TECHNOBABBLE.

[Archer is standing in the middle of the bridge, as a camera moves across the foreground, filming the scene.]
[Close-up of Archer through the monitor. In the foreground Mayweather is at the helm. Two other crewmembers can be seen behind a console in the background.]
Archer: "We're sending you a pulsar grid, that should help you locate our star system."

BUT THIS TIME AROUND, THE WARDROBE, GADGETS AND SETS ARE ALL CHANGING. NEW DIGS DESCRIBED AS HAVING A SUBMARINE-TYPE FEEL.

[Zoom out to see Trinneer leaning on a console, and Dominic Keating (Malcolm Reed) sitting on chair on the bridge.]
[Shot of the Engineering set, showing the oval, horizontal warp core. Camera pans around to show the raised walkways around the set.]
[Bakula standing on the bridge set. Mayweather sitting at his console.]
Archer: "Run this through the translation matrix."

ENTERPRISE, CURRENTLY SHOOTING HERE IN HOLLYWOOD, AND BAKULA SAYS SINCE HE'S ALWAYS BEEN A BIG TREKKER, HE'S LOOKING FORWARD TO BOLDLY GOING WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE.

[Close-up of Bakula sitting on the bridge set.]
Bakula: "When they called me and said 'Do you want to be the first captain?' - I don't know that I would've if they'd said 'Do you want to be the next captain?' in whatever century they were heading into after Voyager, I don't know that I would've done that, but to be the first captain, you know, I kind of, kick it off."

Bakula: (off-screen) "And the script, you know, is fantastic, and it's unlike a lot of the other Star Trek scripts."
[Seen through the viewfinder, Archer turns around.]
Archer: "See if you can find another hatch."

[Back in the UPN 13 Studio.]
UPN Newsreader: "The big question is 'Will there be any beaming up?' - Bakula says 'You'll have to find that out yourself.'"
With the airing of this clip, the only crew member who has not yet been seen in uniform is Doctor Phlox, played by John Billingsley. As UPN's promotion campaign for the show continues, more glimpses of the ship and crew will undoubtedly appear over the coming weeks.

Courtesy of TJ Pridonoff and Section 31, a digitised clip of the segment is now available online. The clip, which is 1.5-minute, 7.5-megabyte AVI-file, can be downloaded here at Section 31, or via our local mirror.
