Producers Look Back On Voyager

Now that Star Trek: Voyager is nearing the end of it seven-year run, some of the people involved in creating the show are speaking more freely about its hits and misses.

"I feel that we've been quite successful at creating seven seasons of a Star Trek series with a female captain," executive producer Rick Berman told Ian Spelling at Inside Trek. "I think that we've been successful at creating seven seasons of a Star Trek series that was, for the most part, out of contact with humanity, lost in another part of space."

One of the criticisms that some fans directed at the show was that not all of its characters were as well-developed as some others, and Berman seemed to agree with this. "I have mixed feelings about how some of the characters developed," he admitted, but added, "I think the addition of Seven of Nine was a very positive addition, something I'm proud of and that I think really worked. And I think that we have kept Roddenberry's vision alive during the course of this show."

Brannon Braga, who helmed Voyager for several seasons, commented on how the should could be compared to The Next Generation. "I think we struck a chord with a whole new generation of Star Trek fans, younger fans for whom The Next Generation was not a new show but one they caught in syndication. So I think maybe the sensibilities of Voyager, which are a bit more cutting-edge in terms of visuals and so forth, might make the older shows seem a little bit more archaic by comparison."

"Look, Voyager had its problems," he continued. "It never struck the bull's eye like The Next Generation did, but it's very difficult to recapture the phenomenon that Star Trek was in the early part of the '90s - it was new and fresh and special. And I think that, ultimately, Voyager held its own."

Other people who talked to Ian Spelling about the past seven years of Voyager include Kate Mulgrew (Kathryn Janeway), Robert Beltran (Chakotay) and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine).
