'Homestead' Review Round-Up

After 'Homestead' aired, several sites put up their review of Neelix' last adventure aboard Voyager. Reactions to the episode were generally positive, with most agreeing that the episode was a worthy goodbye to everyone's favourite Talaxian.

  • Jim Wright at Delta Blues has posted his review of the latest Voyager episode. "In short: Jim likes." The longer version goes into the full exhaustive but highly entertaining synopsis of the episode, and the usual in depth analysis that would make Seven of Nine's Astrometric data analysis proud.

It warms my heart more than you know that the episode that begins with First Contact Day, in effect ends with another one. It's a day of celebrating beginnings. New diplomatic relations. And of course, new personal relations.

The full review, in which Jim awards the episode five stars on a four star scale, can be found here at Delta Blues.

  • O. Deus at TrekWeb thought that Neelix was "wrapped up surprisingly well' in the episode.

Unlike Kes's departure, Neelix's departure is unforced and reasonable. Every single scene from the tour with the aliens pointing out the ambiguous nature of his position on Voyager, his candle-lit dinner with the Talaxian female that causes him to realise how much he's missed the company of his own people, and finally finding a child for whom he could be an actual father, instead of a babysitter. One could complain that it's odd that these issues haven't really been addressed before this, but that's a general complaint about the show rather than this episode in particular.

  • IGN Sci Fi's Jason Bateas was also impressed with the episode saying "Aw gee, the guy's gone, I don't have the heart to rag on him anymore. And admit it, when Tuvok did his little two-step, did you have tear in your eye? Goodbye, Neelix. Godspeed, little buddy." The episode was awarded a 3 out of 5 rating in the full commentary, which can be found here at IGN Sci Fi.

  • Fan favourite reviewer Monkee awarded the episode 9.0 out of 10, knocking a mark off for the fact that Neelix' goodbye scenes with the crew weren't included. She says:
Okay, now this is something you won't hear me saying very often – BRAVO, Voyager PTB! I probably should say it more often. I love this show. It's flawed, but I do love it. I've been so distressed about the finale rumours (as well I should be!) that I haven't even begun to mourn the loss of this show. So, now I've said it. This is one episode they did right. How I hope I'll be able to say it again after the finale, too. Doesn't seem likely, but who knows?

You can find the full commentary at Monkee's Reviews.

  • Michelle Erica Green thought the episode was sound structurally and enjoyed the continuity nod to past episodes. However, there were still too many nitpicks that spoiled the episode.

I'm not going to dwell on niggling issues like what's to stop the miners from returning with more powerful explosives, nor the built-in limitations of living in tunnels in an asteroid that could smash into another asteroid any time. And I certainly don't want to think about how in heck the Talaxians managed to travel so far in the time since Talax lost its struggle with the Hakonians, which "Jetrel" led us to believe was within the past decade or so. Those sorts of nitpicks I can live with. If only the finale for the rest of the characters could be as graceful as "Homestead," Voyager would end on a positive note.

  • Over at Section 31, Bonnie Malmat really liked the episode, awarding it a 10 out of ten rating and an A+. You can read her full review here

  • Finally, Jacqueline Bundy at the Trekker Newsletter thought 'Homestead' was "an extremely well done, satisfying episode" and awarded it 8 out of 10. The full review can be found here at TTN.
