'Nemesis' Misses Oscar F/X Shortlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Wednesday announced the shortlists for the visual effects & sound editing Oscars, and 'Star Trek Nemesis' failed to secure a berth.

Variety reported that the short list includes George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic for the visual effects category, being shortlisted for work on 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', 'Men in Black II,' 'Minority Report' and 'Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones'. 'Spider-Man', 'XXX' and 'MIB II' also received nods.

George Lucas's Skywalker Sound has also done well, being nominated for its work on 'Harry Potter', 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Minority Report'. 'Spider-Man' and 'XXX' were also shortlisted.

Trek has been nominated for ten Oscars over the years in categories such as Best Makeup, Best Original Score and Best Art Direction. Paramount opened a web site recently (story) covering their films for Oscar nomination, which included information on 'Nemesis' and suggested categories for nomination.

Although there are categories such as Best Actor, for which Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard) was put forward, it is very unlikely that 'Nemesis' will be shortlisted due to the nature of past nominations, and the lack of box office success for 'Nemesis'.
