Why is Star Trek so popular? It's an oft-debated question, but a new documentary on the franchise plans to get to the bottom of the Trek phenomenon once and for all.

In honour of Star Trek's 35th anniversary, 'America Loves...Star Trek' will premiere October 1 on TNN as part of the network's week-long TNG marathon.

The documentary will take a look at the impact of the franchise on our society, including scientific and technological inspirations, as well as profiling the various people involved both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

To this end, the special includes interviews with Majel Roddenberry, widow of creator Gene Roddenberry, current franchise head Rick Berman, William Shatner (James T. Kirk), Kate Mulgrew (Kathryn Janeway), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) and Michael Dorn (Worf). Also featured are Dr. Mae Jameson, the first African-American woman in space, and Rick Searfoss, a NASA shuttle pilot.

TNN will air the documentary at 7:00pm Eastern Time, October 1. Throughout the week the network will be airing 77 of the most popular TNG episodes from 9:00am - 3:00pm Eastern Time.
