William Shatner (James T. Kirk) will be honoured for his film and television career by a Canadian genre entertainment channel later this month.

Space: The Imagination Station will bestow a Lifetime Achievement Award the "incomparable" Star Trek actor as part of the First Annual Spacey Awards on June 26.

The Spaceys, which aim to recognise the best in genre film and television, are awards with a difference: "No seats, no sets, and no red carpet!" Rather than give out all the gongs at one location, the Spaceys will be awarded from different parts of Canada during one television broadcast.

"We know Space viewers are huge supporters of sci-fi and fantasy films and television series and that these genres do disproportionately well in Canada," Space's vice-president Paul Gratton told CNEWS. "Our approach will be non-traditional and should be great fun for everyone."

There will be five awards voted on by the Space committee, including Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, Best Horror/Suspense Movie and Best Visual Effects. Star Trek: Nemesis is nominated in one of these categories, Best Action Sequence, for the "Enterprise vs enemy ship showdown".

Fans can also have their say in several Viewers' Choice categories, with Enterprise up for two gongs. Archer and crew will take on Angel, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Farscape and Smallville in the Favourite TV Series category, while T'Pol faces off with Buffy, Spike, Dinah Redmond Lance (Birds of Prey), Charles Gunn (Angel) and Clark Kent for Favourite TV Hottie.

Shinzon from Star Trek Nemesis faces a showdown with other silver screen baddies, including Star Wars' Jango Fett and Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, for the title of Favourite Movie Villain. Captain Jean-Luc Picard's opponents in the Favourite Movie Hero category include Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings and the pint-sized wizard himself, Harry Potter.

Viewers can vote at the Spaceys 2003 website until June 13. The awards will be broadcast on Space: The Imagination Station at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time on June 26. Thanks to 'Ziggy' for this!
