Hello World!

Well, the Dark Angel pilot aired here in the Netherlands yesterday, and despite my very high expectations, it didn't do a thing for me.

First of all, I felt the pilot shouldn't have been a two-hour presentation. Many of the sub-plots that were included now were clearly just there as filler, especially the scenes about the colleague of Max who was cheating on his fiancée.

Secondly, the show seems to be utterly lacking any humour. If you do a show about a teenage superhero only using those abilities to deliver packages, you should at least acknowledge that with a wink here and there. Instead we got Max's bored-teenager attitude which I didn't care for at all.

Finally, and most importantly, where's all the action and sci-fi effects we were promised? With the large budget, I really was expecting the show to do a much better job at suggesting a future. I liked Blade Runner's 2019 a lot better than Dark Angel's 2019, where there only were a few hoverdrones to suggest a future. I also missed a few great action scenes - it was all a bit tame, it seemed.

In the end, the pilot to me gave the impression of being James Cameron's high-budget view of a low-budget series. Of course, the pilot looked visually stunning, but those looks were only used for very small-scale events - the main villain this episode certainly wasn't one to get very excited about, nor where most of the other guest characters. I wish they had just pulled out all the stops for the pilot and presented a big action adventure - this just left me with a big disappointing feeling of having spent two hours watching basically nothing. I'll still give the next few episodes a try, but so far I'm not at all impressed.
