Toshiba and CBS Home Entertainment will join together for the launch of Star Trek on HD-DVD, offering fans who purchase the DVD set and a Toshiba HD DVD player a limited edition remote control designed like a Star Trek phaser.

PR Newswire published a press release with details, stating that the promotion will begin November 20th when the first season of the original series is released on high definition DVD. The set will contain combination discs that can also be played in standard DVD players.

"To be part of bringing the pioneering episodes of the landmark 'Star Trek' franchise to fans is truly special," said Jodi Sally, the Vice President of Marketing for Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "With this offer fans can also get their hands on merchandise that will not be available any other way."

The Toshiba HD-DVD players will allow fans to access disc capabilities such as picture-in-picture video commentaries and comparisons of original and remastered episode special effects.

In addition, High-Def Digest has provided a video glimpse provided by Paramount of some of the HD-DVD interactive features. Included in the clip are new CGI visual effects, musical enhancements and the "Starfleet Academy" interactive picture-in-picture screens that allow viewers to watch interviews with the cast and crew as well as behind the scenes footage from episodes.
