Visitor Would Love To Live In The Future

Instead of simply being an actress on a sci-fi television series, Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys) secretly wants to live in the future to take advantage of all the latest time-saving devices.

"The one thing I find myself wishing is that I could beam myself places," she confided in Star Trek Monthly's Ian Spelling (via Trek Galaxy). "In my mind, when I set up appointments and things it's as if I am beaming myself places. I never give myself travel time, so I always end up late everywhere. So beaming would be a great thing."

Visitor has certainly been busy since the end of Deep Space Nine, appearing in the musical 'Chicago' on Broadway and as the mysterious Madame X in Dark Angel. With all these high-profile roles under her belt, how does the actress cope with fans recognising her in the street?

"I was just talking about it to someone who's not in the business and they thought it must be annoying," she said. "I had to say, when I was doing soap operas years ago, it could be annoying because people sometimes didn't make a distinction between me and my character, and they thought they knew me. But for the most part, Star Trek fans are very sophisticated people. They'll say, 'I don't want to disturb you, but I really wanted to say how much I enjoy your work.' What could be better than that? Wouldn't you love somebody coming up to you and saying, 'Your work is incredible, thank you for it'? And off they go."

Despite horror stories of fanatical fans at conventions, Visitor hasn't had any really bizarre Trek experiences, apart from seeing herself in toy stores. "I don't think there's been anything weird," she said. "It's all been great. All the travel I've done around the world as a result of Star Trek has been amazing. But it's not weird. [...] Weird is seeing yourself in effigy. The doll thing is weird. Being on sale at Toys R Us is weird."

If she hadn't been cast as the Bajoran Kira Nerys, the actress said she would have tried to jump aboard the U.S.S. Voyager. "I would have played Janeway," Visitor said. "I desperately went after the producers to give me a shot and they said, 'You've got a job already.'"

The full interview with Visitor, in which she also talked about her fondest DS9 memories, can be found in issue 89 of Star Trek Monthly, out now in the United Kingdom. Alternatively, a transcript can be found here at Trek Galaxy.
