Robert Beltran Interviewed

Qie at Voyager's Delights has reprinted an interview with Robert Beltran (Chakotay), which first appeared in the June 2000 edition of the official Star Trek Magazine. Though this might be because it's an official Paramount magazine, Beltran sounds a lot more positive than usual about Star Trek, praising the acting style and "intelligent and clear writing" of the show.

In the interview, Beltran also gives his opinion on some of the Voyager story arcs of the past few years, including Chakotay's religious beliefs, the Maquis, and the Janeway-Chakotay relationship:

The relationship was frustrating for many fans (executive producer Brannon Braga calls them 'the JC-ers') who wanted to see the captain and first officer get together, but Robert felt it reached a point where the writers had to take things further or call a halt. "I think Chakotay was in love with Janeway," he says, "right up to the episode where he gave her a watch ['Year of Hell, Pt I'] and she rejected it.

"That's when I called the producers and said, 'Look, this has got to stop; either something happens, or we stop having him constantly getting his heart broken by this woman.' He's an intelligent man, and I think most intelligent men know when the game's over, as far as a woman's concerned. Even though he may still be pining for her, I think he made up his mind that it was dead; it was over with." And did the producers respond to his request? "Yeah because they were sort of getting the same idea anyway!"

More can be found in the full, rather long interview.
