Hello World!

We're going to Staunton, Virginia tonight to the Blackfriars Playhouse to see Macbeth with the kids. This will be their first full-length Shakespeare play on a stage; they've seen films of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing and Henry V, but we wanted to take them to the only recreation in the world of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. There are tours of the theatre in the morning as well, and since the kids have been to the recreation of the Globe in London and on a tour of Stratford-Upon-Avon, we figured this would be a good summer weekend expedition.

In preparation we were going to watch the Ian McKellen-Judi Dench version of Macbeth from several years ago, but a couple of my friends pointed out that that production is pretty dry, and I decided that they were probably old enough to watch Roman Polanski's bloody but undeniably engrossing Macbeth. Polanski is one of those people whose work I usually try to avoid because his behavior has revolted me, but given that I watched The Patriot despite absolutely loathing Mel Gibson and everything he stands for, I figured it should be relatively easy to overlook Polanski's sins. His Macbeth is beautifully filmed (mostly in Wales, I'm told) and while none of the performances are quite as memorable as those in the Macbeth I saw in Stratford, Ontario when last I was there, most of them are appealing. We'll see how Shenandoah's American Shakespeare Center does with it.

  • Montgomery To Coto: Give Me Work To Do!
Anthony Montgomery (Mayweather) had one wish for Star Trek: Enterprise's fourth season: screen time. "I said, 'Hey Manny, put Travis in an episode...I actually bring something to this, and I know that I'm a part of everything, but don't just have me sitting there and give me one thing to do."

  • Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens Join 'Enterprise'
Star Trek novelists Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens joined the Enterprise staff as story editors, having worked on other science fiction shows and collaborated with William Shatner on his James T. Kirk novels.

  • Shatner Set For Two-Episode Guest Stint?
And speaking of Shatner, UPN reportedly commissioned advertisements touting the actor's return to Star Trek, though the appearance never happened as negotiations allegedly broke down over money.
