Hello World!

Could anyone explain to me what the purpose is of those call letters used by American television stations, like WPIX or KBMC or so? This has been puzzling me ever since I first saw one of them, but I still have no clue what they actually stand for or why stations use them as name. Are they self-chosen? And why do they only start with a W or a K?

Hmm. It appears I am really one of the only people who like 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' best. Maybe time's clouding my memories (it's been a while since I saw the film), but I just love the gorgeous shots of the Enterprise and the epic feel of the film. I really can't wait for the DVD to be released.
