Rachel Nichols may be the second female cast member after Zoe Saldana to join the new Star Trek film.

According to a report on Freeze Dried Movies, a "reliable source" of that site overheard that Nichols has joined the cast of the new Trek film. Nichols is no stranger to Trek XI director J.J. Abrams, as she previously worked with him on ABC's Alias, where she played the role of computer expert Rachel Gibson. She also appeared in the comedy Dumb & Dumberer, and will be starring in the upcoming horror film P2.

Freeze Dried Movies didn't report the role which Nichols will be playing. However, possibilities include Original Series characters such as Yeoman Janice Rand, or Nurse Chapel.

Nichols would be joining a group of actors that already includes the full cast that will be playing the crew of the Enterprise, including Saldana as Uhura, and Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. Fans curious to find out whether Pine will be good for the role of Kirk should head over to UGO, which is currently running an "online film festival" offering snippets of Pine's earlier roles.
