New 'Starfleet Command' Game Coming Soon

No longer confined to the television screen, the fearsome Orion Pirates, who appeared in many Star Trek and Animated Series episodes, are set to feature in the latest edition of the 'Starfleet Command' game series.

'Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates,' scheduled to be released by Interplay in the second quarter of this year, is a stand alone mission pack, which does not require 'Starfleet Command II: Empires at War' to play. Instead, this game adds a new storyline and additional features to the series, including unique sheild-piercing phasers and heavy photon weapons.

The player commands one of the eight races from the original game (such as the Federation, Klingons, Romulans) and must choose between fighting the Orion Pirates or forming an alliance with them to take over the galaxy. The Orions themselves will be made up of eight cartels, each with individual histories, voices, interfaces and emblems.

In addition to a 12 mission campaign and 26 skirmish missions, the game also features three special bonus missions. These additional scenarios are based on The Original Series episode 'A Piece of the Action,' in which the Enterprise returns to find that the Iotians are being gradually taken over by the Orion Pirates.

The original 'Starfleet Command' was released in 1999, and was billed by Interplay as "the first Star Trek licensed game that tests your tactical skills in realistic starship combat." Subsequent bonus missions were then released, including the infamous Kobayashi Maru scenario. The sequel, 'Starfleet Command II: Empires at War,' debuted in 2000 with new ships, races and an expanded "Metaverse" feature that accurately depicts the changing military and economic environment in the game.
