Steven Culp, who played the recurring character Major Hayes on Star Trek: Enterprise last season, has joined the cast of ABC's drama Desperate Housewives.

Variety reported (via Yahoo!) that Culp, Passions' Jesse Metcalfe and Party of Five's Brenda Strong had all signed onto the show, taking on roles originally played by Michael Reilly Burke, Kyle Searles and Sheryl Lee.

Strong's character, Mary Alice, commits suicide in the pilot but continues on the series as a narrator from beyond the grave, making comments about the neighbourhood she left behind, including a lonely divorcee, a Martha Stewart-type homemaker and a woman cheating on her wealthy husband with their gardener.

Producers plan to reshoot scenes from the pilot featuring Lee, Burke and Searles with Strong, Culp and Metcalfe. The Touchstone TV series will be broadcast Sunday nights at 9 p.m. this fall.

Variety's article on the Desperate Housewives cast changes is here. ABC's page on the series, which still lists the original pilot cast, is here.
