Hypertext Review Updates

Jamahl Epsicokhan has updated Star Trek Hypertext with reviews of the latest Voyager episodes - 'Author, Author' and 'Friendship One.'

Jammer certainly liked 'Author, Author,' calling it "one of the series' best installments." He praised the episode's "standout comedy writing and acting," as well as the thematic links present throughout this season. Here's an excerpt from the review:

This first stage of "Author, Author" is compelling on several levels. First is the fact that Doc's story itself, while way melodramatic, is engaging. Second is that we see the similarities between the Vortex crew and the Voyager crew, and certain traits have interesting perceptiveness behind the exaggeration. And third is that we see the differences. My, oh my, the differences. For Doc's purposes, exaggeration, I fear, defeats perceptiveness. But for "Author, Author's" purposes, it's brilliant.

Also new at the site is a review of the most recent Voyager episode, 'Friendship One.' Jammer wasn't quite as positive about this episode, noting that "it's one of those shows that's sometimes respectful but largely unmoving." Particuarly, he thought that the central plot was a let down, as it felt as if the episode was on "autopilot."

Like many other reviewers, Jammer made mention of the sudden death of Lieutenant Carey,(Josh Clark) who had not appeared in Voyager's real time line since Season One, although he made flashback appearances in 'Relativity' and 'Fury.' "Now Carey gets his true farewell appearance less than a month from the end of the series," Jammer wrote. "I guess his number had to be up one of these days, turning out to be later rather than sooner."

In the complete review, 'Friendship One' is awarded two and a half stars.
