Anton Yelchin, best known to Star Trek fans as Chekov in Star Trek XI, has been cast as Porter in The Beaver.
Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster will play Walter and Meredith Black, parents of Porter. Walter Black, a troubled father, husband and CEO of a failing toy company, finds comfort when he adopts a beaver hand puppet, using it to communicate, to the dismay of his son who wants his mother to divorce her dysfunctional husband.
Working on both independent and action-filled blockbusters, Anton Yelchin (Chekov) has been fortunate in his roles.
While fans enjoy lots of action in a movie, it’s the characters that hold and catch their attention. “In the best sort of spectacle action movies, character comes first and that’s why you buy the action,” said Yelchin. “I got lucky with [Terminator: Salvation and Star Trek XI] because there was a lot of character work to be done. Terminator was challenging and interesting and definitely there was a lot of work to do, which is great because we don’t often expect to go into these movies and have challenging work to do. But I was lucky with Star Trek as well because it was the same thing. There was this whole other character to work with, different, totally different, different physicality, more joyous and light, but the same idea. They were both challenging.”

Zachary Quinto spoke with Lyons & Bailes Reel Talk about Spock (Star Trek XI) and Sylar (Heroes) and how they are similar in some ways.
“These are both characters who have deeply rooted internal conflict, a duality they’re really struggling with,” said Quinto about the two characters he plays on Heroes and Star Trek XI. “So for me, the point of departure was not completely dissimilar but where the characters go in terms of their emotional journey is very different obviously.” (more…)
Four of the Star Trek XI actors explained how they were initially attracted by the Star Trek XI script or their specific characters and what they did to prepare for their roles.
As reported by Firstshowing.net, Bruce Greenwood was attracted to taking on the role of Pike because of the problem his character faced. “Well he’s got this tremendous dilemma of having to…having an instinct about somebody who to all appearances is going to let him down but his gut is to follow his instinct in spite of the way the kid’s behaving,” said Greenwood. “So there’s a tremendous father-son dynamic to that dilemma. That’s what appealed to me.” (more…)

As seen in a video by FOX New York, the reality of Kirk wasn’t quite what Chris Pine expected when he took on the role. “I signed up,” he explained. “I was very excited. I thought I was going to be the hero of the movie and get the lady and beat people up, and it was actually the exact opposite.

Don’t worry about canon, says Walter Koenig, Star Trek‘s original Chekov.
As reported by the TrekZone Network, Koenig encourages fans not to prejudge Star Trek XI or get overly concerned with past Star Trek history. “I think if [fans] just put away any prejudice and not worry about canon they’ll have a good time,” he said. “You know, nothing is carved into stone. Star Trek isn’t based on historical facts. It’s just imaginary, creation. People’s imagination. It’s fictitious. So, if they take something and change it, go with it, accept it for what it’s like and have a good time!” (more…)
