On October 13, Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner will appear together on an episode of The Big Bang Theory.

Both will appear as themselves in the episode and it turns out that Sheldon (Jim Parsons) likes one of the pair but hates the other.

Sheldon dislikes Wheaton because the actor once failed to show at a science fiction convention and so in this episode with the two TNG stars, he declines an invitation to a party at Wheaton’s house due to his dislike of the Trek actor. Leonard (Johnny Galecki) does attend however and he “share[s] root beer with Brent [Spiner]” to the dismay of Sheldon, who considers it a “betrayal to their friendship.”

But don’t expect Sheldon to stay home once he finds out about Spiner’s presence at the party, said Executive Producer Bill Prady. “It will be hard for Sheldon to stay away, because “of all the Star Trek characters Sheldon would love the most,” explained Prady, “we thought Data, the android [who has] trouble fitting in and wants emotions, is pretty close to his heart.”

The Big Bang Theory episode with the two TNG actors will air October 13 on CBS at 8 PM.

Recently, Wil Wheaton had to undergo the indignity of a routine security at the Los Angeles airport and he found the experience anything but routine.

When passengers in America fly, they are given a choice between being scanned, where not much is left to the imagination, or if they opt out of the scan, an intrusive pat-down by a (Transportation Security Administration) TSA agent.

Wheaton chose the pat-down, partly due to concerns over the radiation exposure from the backscatter scanners, and partly due to privacy concerns. His pat-down experience left him “violated, humiliated and angry.”

“Yesterday, I was touched, in my opinion, inappropriately, by a TSA agent at LAX,” he said. “When I left the security screening yesterday, I didn’t feel safe. I felt violated, humiliated, assaulted, and angry. I felt like I never wanted to fly again. I was so furious and upset; my hands shook for quite some time after the ordeal was over. I felt sick to my stomach for hours.”

On his Twitter account, Wheaton said that he “got groped so aggressively…I never want to fly again. Not even my doctor touches my junk that much.”

Some people have chosen other means of transportation due to the choice between being seen nude or being groped, but that is not always an option. “I do not have the luxury of simply refusing to fly unless and until this policy changes,” Wheaton said. “I have to travel dozens of times a year for work, and it simply isn’t practical to travel any other way. Airlines know that I am not unique in this regard, so they have no incentive to take a stand on their customers’ behalf.

“I believe that the choice we are currently given by the American government when we need to fly is morally wrong, unconstitutional, and does nothing to enhance passenger safety.

“I don’t believe that all TSA officers are automatically bad people…For example, I recently flew out of Seattle, opted-out, and got a non-invasive, professional, polite pat-down. I realize that most TSA officers are doing the best they can in a job that requires them to interact with people who automatically dislike them and what they represent. It isn’t the individual officer who is the problem; it’s the policies he or she is instructed to carry out that need to change.”

Wheaton plans to consult his attorney regarding the ordeal.

Fans of Wil Wheaton will be pleased to hear that he is releasing a new collection of short fiction stories, titled The Day After and Other Stories.

The fifty-page book of short stories will be available in both paperback (for a limited time only) and as a PDF version.

Wheaton posted about the book, calling it “one of the scariest things I’ve ever done.” He sold a few short stories as a chapbook last year, and explained that while he’s OK with writing non-fiction, fiction is a different story. “I am paralyzed with terror whenever I think about releasing something I invented out of nothing more than an idea to the public,” Wheaton explained, “and before I actually release it, I hear Carrie’s mother screaming at me, ‘THEY’RE ALL GOING TO LAUGH AT YOU!’”

But several things convinced Wheaton to summon up the courage to release his short fiction. “First, ‘Project Do Something Creative Every Day’ is making me feel less and less afraid of sucking,” he said. “Like I said recently, the goal isn’t to be perfect; the goal is to be creative. I don’t think The Day After and Other Stories is perfect, but it is creative, and the few people I have shown it to told me they liked it.

“Second, over four hundred people expressed an interest in buying an autographed copy of The Happiest Days of Our Lives over the last couple of days. That really blew me away, and made me think, ‘Well, maybe there aren’t as many people out there waiting for an excuse to laugh at you as you think. Also? It’s adorable that you think you’re that important to anyone, jackass.’”

The paperback, which can be purchased here, will only be available until December 30, and will sell for $11.00. A PDF-format version will sell for $5.00 and can be purchased and downloaded by heading to the link located here. A short preview of the book can also be seen at the PDF-format link.

Although his Star Trek: Nemesis scene was left on the cutting room floor, Wil Wheaton didn’t mind, as he was interested in something other than just appearing on film.

The deleted scene, which can be seen in the Star Trek: Nemesis DVD extras, had Wesley Crusher in attendance at the Riker-Troi wedding.

Filming the scene gave Wheaton what he had long desired, a chance to work with his The Next Generation co-workers as equal adults. “That experience for me was less about whatever made it onto the screen and more about having two days to go back to Star Trek and finally be the adult with the adults, which is an experience I’d always wanted to have as a kid,” explained Wheaton. “I never got to experience that when I was little, and it was incredibly wonderful. I wrote about it in my book, Just a Geek. There are two chapters all about what it was like to be there and to work with everyone again. It was like coming back from college to be with the family.”

That was not Wheaton’s last Star Trek work; he had a voice cameo in Star Trek XI that was originally supposed to be kept secret. “J.J. (Abrams) and I were going to keep that a complete secret because we just thought it was kind of a cool Easter egg thing that no one would ever know about,” said Wheaton of the voice cameo. “Then someone at Paramount found out and they had to do a bunch of bookkeeping with me and they had to credit me. And I didn’t want to get in trouble with my union. So we went ahead and told the world about it. It was really fun. Right up until the moment I was actually standing in the ADR studio at 20th Century Fox with J.J., I was convinced that somebody was pulling a practical joke on me. But I couldn’t figure out who I know that had the money and the desire to pull a practical joke this elaborate on me. It was great.”

Star Trek XI was a good movie, according to Wheaton, especially for the current generation of young fans. “I loved the movie,” he said. “I really liked the way that J.J. made the Star Trek universe relevant to my kids’ generation. And I’m real excited to see where it goes next.”

Wheaton will be seen next on The Ho, Ho, Ho Job episode of Leverage, which airs this Sunday on TNT.

A new e-book, Clash of the Geeks, including stories by Wil Wheaton and John Scalzi (Old Man’s War), is available for download with all donations going to a charitable cause.

Clash of the Geeks is the result of a writing contest, which received hundreds of submissions, both amateur and professional. “We were originally supposed to have just one winner,” said Scalzi, “but when it came down to it we couldn’t decide between the final two (by Bernadette Durbin and Scott Mattes). Then we realized we didn’t have to choose between them, and picked them both.”

The stories take on the “very serious clash” of an Orc-like Scalzi vs. Wil Wheaton. Wheaton sports a sweater with a clown on the front and rides a “unicorn pegasus kitten.” The e-book, published by Subterranean Press, can be downloaded for free here, but donations are welcomed and a donation button can be found on the right side of the webpage. All monies received will go to the Lupus Alliance of America.

Several hours after the e-book launch began, three thousand dollars has been raised. “We don’t have a particular sum in mind to raise, and speaking from experience of having done several charitable writing projects, results really are all over the board,” said Scalzi. “We’ll be happy with whatever we get. But off the top of my head I’ll say this: If we eventually raise $25,000, I’ll consider this a successful project. If we raise $50k, I’ll feel like King of the Internet.”

“Behold the cover it all its terrible glory,” said Wheaton in an entry in his blog today. “Cower, mortals, for it lives!”

Fans of The Big Bang Theory who also like Star Trek will have a double dose of enjoyment as George Takei is scheduled to appear on the show, and if all goes well, Wil Wheaton may return.

Takei will appear in an episode, in a cameo, playing himself, opposite guest star Katee Sackhoff.

According to executive producer Bill Prady, Takei and Sackhoff will play different sides of Wolowitz’s conscience. “George Takei plays himself,” said Prady, “and he’s the other person guiding Wolowitz [Simon Helberg] in his thoughts as he tries to figure out what to do about Bernadette.” Bernadette (Melissa Rauchberg) is Wolowitz’s ex-girlfriend and he is thinking about getting back together with her.

Prady spoke about his hopes for getting another Star Trek actor, The Next Generation‘s Wil Wheaton, back on the show. Wheaton appeared on the show twice in the third season, playing Sheldon’s (Jim Parsons) enemy. “We started talking about the idea of minor celebrities cutting in line,” said Prady. “And we thought it might be funny to have our guys waiting in line for a one-time-only midnight screening of something like Raiders Of The Lost Ark with restored footage, and Wil Wheaton and three of his friends cut the line.

“When it comes time for our guys to get in, the line stops – Wil took the last four seats and Sheldon is just furious. Because it doesn’t make sense to him. Wil’s celebrity is not applicable here. This is not Star Trek. It’s just wrong.”

This story would be based on a real life incident in Las Vegas. “We were mostly talking about our good friend Adam Savage from Mythbusters,” explained Prady. “He was apparently in Las Vegas, there was a Star Trek auction, and there was a preview and he got to cut the line.”

The fourth season of The Big Bang Theory begins on September 23.

It might have been tricky to take an alien that was really an oil slick seriously, but that was exactly what Patrick Stewart had to do as an actor in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Stewart came to Trek with loads of Shakespearean experience, and in summing up what that experience brought to his role of Jean-Luc Picard, Stewart said, “I would say it brought gravitas maybe.”

“[Gravitas and more seriousness] is what we tried to bring,” said Stewart. “I mean, we had a lot of fun, too. Of course, fantastic fun. But yeah, we took it seriously. And so if I’m standing there talking to, you know, some alien on the view screen, or an oil slick, which I did once have a conversation with, or a grain of rice that I talked to once, you know, you better take that seriously.”

Although he took his work seriously, Stewart didn’t think that the show would last beyond a season. “I was told we wouldn’t make it through the first season,” he said. “Everybody I went to ask, ‘What should I do, I’ve been offered this job, what should I do?’ A few people I knew in Hollywood, their opinions ranged from, ‘You’ll be lucky to do all 26 episodes,’ through to ‘Eh, a couple years maximum.’ Nobody… nobody… banked on it.”

One of Stewart’s fellow actors, Wil Wheaton, is now known as a “geek.” According to Stewart, Wheaton “always was” a geek. “He set up my first computer,” Stewart explained. “I got the then-head of Apple, Jean-Louis Gassée (was a) big ‘Star Trek’ fan. And one day, all these boxes arrived. I didn’t have a computer, (just) an electric typewriter. All these boxes arrived and Wil saw them there. And I don’t know, somewhere said (high pitched and excited) ‘Wow! Man! You’ve got all this cool stuff!’ I mean, literally, that was the dialogue. And he said, ‘You gotta let me set it up!’ So he came around with another friend of ours during the production, and he set up my first computer.”

Stewart will be seen in the role of Claudius in PBS’s production of Hamlet on Great Performances on April 28. Later this year, he will perform in the title role of Hamlet, also for PBS.
