Star Trek XI‘s Zachary Quinto speculates on the future of Spock in Star Trek 2.
With the destruction of Vulcan in Star Trek XI, there will be pressure on Spock to help his race. “I would imagine (this is just speculative),” said Quinto, “his planet’s been destroyed, he feels a real imperative to rebuild his race. But he’s in love with a human. There’s probably some potential conflict in that dynamic, I would not be surprised, and I would be intrigued and excited by that if that were the case.”
John Bettis, best-known to Star Trek fans for a song in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this summer.
Responsible for writing hundreds of songs, including several for The Carpenters, as well as Promise Me You’ll Remember from The Godfather- Part III, Bettis will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 16.
Last month, TrekToday reported that a set of Mr. Potato Head figures of Kirk and Kor the Klingon would appear in August, and now a new set of Mr. Potato Heads will join that first set just in time for the holiday season.
The second set of Star Trek-themed Potato Heads will feature Mr. Spock and Lieutenant Uhura. This Potato Head set will be one of the first Potato Head sets to incorporate a new Potato Heads redesign.
Nichelle Nichols, who can be seen in tonight’s Pioneers of Television: Science Fiction (airing on PBS), spoke about Star Trek fandom and how fans “got” what Gene Roddenberry was trying to do with Star Trek.
According to Nichols, Star Trek fandom was the first one to put on conventions to meet with others who enjoyed their favorite television show. “First, it was a first,” she said. “Now, there are all kinds of conventions that celebrate their favorites, but this was the first. And so it was very, very different. And it was very honorable, you know? They loved the show. They got it. They got that Gene Roddenberry created something in the future that ‘today’ — 1966…”
Fans of Star Trek: Voyager‘s Roxann Dawson and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s Chase Masterson will enjoy the latest issue of Star Trek Magazine.
In Star Trek Magazine #31, as well as interviews with Dawson and Masterson, there will be a “look at the Haynes Enterprise Manual” and an article on Star Trek‘s strong females, featuring Lieutenant Uhura.
Nichelle Nichols answered questions about her time on the original series, and gave her opinion on where the Abrams-verse Uhura should go.
One question that always comes up with original series members concerned getting along now with William Shatner. According to Nichols, “It’s very cordial when we see each other.”
Nichelle Nichols could see a romance between Uhura and Spock because the original series showed plenty of hints of something between the two characters.
Being young and new to Starfleet meant excitement and romance were part of the game, according to Nichols. “…she was a recruit and this was her first trip out. It was the five-mission where no man or woman had gone before. So J.J. [Abrams] had the right, as the director of the prequel, to show the characters as young people. NASA recruits train for a year, sometimes two, before they go out on their first mission. As young people, they’re excited and they’re new and they’re going to go on this mission, and there’s romance and so forth that’s going to go on.”
One of the questions regarding Star Trek XII concerns the Spock-Uhura romance and where, if anywhere, the romance will go.
Trek fans were surprised by the romance between the half-Vulcan Spock and human Uhura in Star Trek XI, and now they wonder what will happen now that Vulcans have become an endangered race.

Co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci explained the reasoning behind Star Trek XI events that would be regarded as controversial by fans. (Spoilers)
As reported by MTV, one of the scenes provoking much discussion by fans is the destruction of Vulcan, one of the founding members of the Federation. “The scariest thing about [destroying Vulcan] was us having to pitch that to Leonard Nimoy,” explained Kurtzman. “‘Hi, I know we just met, but let me tell you about what happens to your home planet.’” (more…)
In addition to the mental demands of playing a character, there were also physical preparations for Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto to complete before they would be ready to step into their roles as Kirk and Spock.
As reported by The Cinema Source, Pine paid attention to the small details of Kirk, so that his portrayal of Kirk would be similar to that of William Shatner. “You watch the show, you know what Kirk does,” he said. “What resonated for me were certain physical things. There’s a way that he holds his body and moves about the deck of the ship that’s very, it’s almost theatrical, you see his kind of theatrical training in his gait and in the way he carries his body, in the way he sits in the chair.” (more…)
When she saw what conventions meant to Star Trek fans and how they enjoyed them, Zoe Saldana wanted some of that passion.
As reported by TrekMovie.com, in her research to understand what it was to be a Star Trek fan, Saldana watched Trekkies 1 and 2 as well as Star Trek episodes. “I didn’t even know what the word ‘Trekkie’ meant,” said Saldana. “So I didn’t know what conventions were. I knew of Star Trek, but not extensively. So part of doing my research to have the feel to be a Trekkie and to go to these conventions.” (more…)
Going back to the beginning means seeing a more emotional side of Spock, as the half-Vulcan struggles to figure out the right balance of emotion and logic.
As reported by Suicidegirls, not only is Spock more emotional in Star Trek XI, but he gets the girl. “I’ll tell you, I was bemused by it when I read it in the script,” said Leonard Nimoy. I thought it was incredible.”
