A brand-new Star Trek XI trailer has been released today in the theater coupled with the movie Watchmen, and has also appeared online at the official Star Trek movie site.

As seen at Startrekmovie.com, the two-minute trailer is chock-full of action and includes previously seen footage plus plenty of new scenes, including information on James T. Kirk’s father.

Highlights of the trailer include: the revelation that James T. Kirk’s father was a starship captain for only twelve minutes, but in that short time, he saved eight hundred lives, including that of his son; the implosion of a planet courtesy of Nero’s weapon; the beginning of an attack on Vulcan; ominous words from Nero, who says that “James T. Kirk was a great man. That was another life,” and a scene where Kirk sits in the captain’s chair for the first time.

The Star Trek XI behind-the-scenes featurette from MTV’s Spoilers was released online today after last night’s airing of the second episode of the movie review show.

As reported by MTV, the new featurette, introduced by Zachary Quinto and running just over a minute in length, is basically a recap of what has already been seen before, with the exception of a shot with J.J. Abrams on what appears to be the bridge of another starship, and a short glimpse of Kirk and Spock fighting each other as seen on a monitor. There are also brief comments from several of the Star Trek XI actors in the short clip. The clip can be seen here.

The second featurette shows some of the same scenes from the film and also offers actor commentary, but then Wil Wheaton is brought in briefly to answer questions about Star Trek XI and Star Trek in general. Amongst the questions asked are “Why are Kirk and Spock fighting?” and “Is (the clip of Kirk making love to a woman) that supposed to be Kirk and Uhura?”

The second featurette is available at Veoh.com.

Even though the Star Trek XI trailer shows a lot of action, it’s aimed at the teens and long-term Star Trek fans will still recognize Star Trek XI as familiar and worthy.

As reported by MTV, Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Wil Wheaton encourages Star Trek fans not to get too worked up over what Star Trek XI seems to be based on the available trailers. “It was all stuff that I’ve seen already,” he said of the footage to be seen on MTV’s upcoming Spoilers, “but it looked cool and everyone in the theater loved it.”“You know, a lot of my fellow Trekkies are all worked up because the trailer shows all this action stuff, and I keep hearing people dismissively calling it “Star Trek: 90210″ just because there are young people in it or something,” Wheaton said. “I really hope those guys can take a step back and realize a couple of things: these trailers and previews aren’t aimed at us; they’re aimed at teenagers, so they have to be presented in a language that they understand.”

According to Wheaton, action is necessary to today’s young audiences. “The damn kids today have grown up in a world where sci-fi is mostly action, and if you show them a lot of intense dialog scenes or quiet character moments, they’re not going to be interested. It is in all of our best interests to get them into the theater, so they can be introduced to Star Trek, get excited about Star Trek, and keep the Star Trek universe alive.”

The thirty second ad is just one of the commercials slated for SuperBowl XLIII, in which the Pittsburgh Steelers will go for their sixthSuper Bowl Championship, playing against the Arizona Cardinals who areseeking their first Super Bowl win. (Go Steelers!)

A thirty-second commercial is setting advertisers back threemillion dollars.

Most ads will be thirty second ads, at least one willrun for fifteen seconds and a handful will run for a full minute. Theads took until almost the last day to sell out unlike in previousyears, due to the economy.

The first half of the Star Trek XI commercial featuresJames Kirk. His first meeting with Leonard McCoy is shown, and the restof the commercial is fast-paced action scenes.
