Takei in New Social Security Commercial

George Takei, Star Trek‘s Lieutenant Sulu, can be seen in two new YouTube videos; one of which is a new commercial for the Social Security Administration and the other a promotion for his forthcoming role in Allegiance, a musical to appear on Broadway next year.

In the Social Security commercial, the latest in a series of commercials that have featured baby boomer celebrities such as Chubby Checker, Takei teams up with Patty Duke to encourage seniors to sign up for Social Security benefits online.

Third Season Of Shatner’s Raw Nerve To Premiere

On January 31, the third season of Shatner’s Raw Nerve will premiere with back-to-back episodes on the Bio channel.

Season Three of Shatner’s Raw Nerve will include familiar television and movie personalities, including three of particular interest to Star Trek fans.

Takei Joins Nickelodeon Show

George Takei, the original series’ Sulu, has joined the Nickelodeon channel’s Supah Ninjas.

Supah Ninjas is a comedy about three kids who are “drafted into a secret world of crime fighting.”

Takei: Don’t Let The Bedbugs Bite

George Takei made the unpleasant acquaintance of a New York nuisance recently when he and husband Brad Altman visited the city.

New Yorkers have been on guard for a while against a pesky parasitic insect, the Cimex lectularius, better-known as the bedbug, which is showing up in apartments, offices, the subway and movie theaters.

Trek’s Takei Targets Bigot

George Takei, the original series’ Mr. Sulu, took aim at an Arkansas school board member whose anti-gay tirade made national headlines recently.

Clint McCance, a member of the Midland district school board in northern Arkansas, did not like the “wear purple” campaign that was intended to show support for ending anti-gay bullying. His Facebook posting used slurs and encouraged gays to “all commit suicide.” After the resulting uproar after his comments were posted, McCance resigned his post.

Two Trek Actors In Big Bang Theory?

Fans of The Big Bang Theory who also like Star Trek will have a double dose of enjoyment as George Takei is scheduled to appear on the show, and if all goes well, Wil Wheaton may return.

Takei will appear in an episode, in a cameo, playing himself, opposite guest star Katee Sackhoff.

Shakespeare In Klingon

First there was Klingon opera. Now fans of both Klingons and Shakespeare can see selections of Shakespeare classics performed in the Klingon language as well as in English.

On September 25 in Arlington, Virginia, the Washington Shakespeare Company will perform an evening of Shakespeare, featuring selections from Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing.

Takei on Gay Marriage

For George Takei, being able to say that he is legally married has influenced how others perceive his relationship.

Takei, a strong proponent of gay marriage who opposes California’s Proposition 8, which would only recognize marriage in California as being between a man and a woman, spoke about the controversial proposition and what legal marriage has done for himself and his husband Brad Altman.

Takei On Prop 8, Trek Fandom

George Takei, who was fortunate enough to be married during the short time that gay marriage was legal in California, reacted to the news that 9th U.S. Circuit Court has overturned Proposition 8, the controversial law which deemed only marriage between a man and a woman to be valid in California.

The legal process isn’t quite over, as an appeal is likely and will probably end up at the U.S. Supreme Court, but foes of Prop 8 are heartened by this week’s action by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court.

Creation Hopes To Break Guiness World Record At Vegas Convention This Week

In addition to hosting over seventy Star Trek celebs at their annual Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, running this week from Thursday through Sunday at the Las Vegas Hilton, Creation Entertainment is gunning for the Guiness World Record for the “largest gathering of people dressed as Star Trek characters.”

Takei On Missed Chances

While many fans might think that George Takei’s thoughts on where Sulu should have gone would focus on the Captain’s chair, Takei felt that something else should have been developed for the character.

Playing Sulu was a “breakthrough opportunity” according to Takei. “Just to be able to play a member of the leadership team, without an accent, was hugely important. So many Asians back then were, first of all, stereotypes and spoke with a heavy accent.”

Trek Stars To Voice Marvel Super Hero Squad

One actor has done voice work on the show before. George Takei voiced Galactus, in the show’s first season.

Takei Supports IFT In Voyages Interview

On June 15, The International Federation of Trekkers (IFT) will launch their new website, and part of their relaunch includes the premiere of Voyages, their official publication, as reported earlier here and here.

TrekToday received a sneak peek of the forthcoming issue, and one of the articles in the magazine features Star Trek‘s George Takei, who has a long association with the IFT, or the “Federation” as it is sometimes called.

Takei: The Census: Be Counted

George Takei and his husband Brad Altman urge same-sex couples to complete the 2010 census and show America how many of them are in a marriage or consider themselves married even if not legally wed.

Takei, complete in a Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan uniform, urged fellow gay couples to participate in the census. “[You may ask] why I’m still wearing this Starfleet uniform,” he said. “It’s to get you to actually listen to this important message, that affects how our community and marriages such as ours are viewed by this nation. Be counted!”
