George Takei made the unpleasant acquaintance of a New York nuisance recently when he and husband Brad Altman visited the city.

George Takei, who was fortunate enough to be married during the short time that gay marriage was legal in California, reacted to the news that 9th U.S. Circuit Court has overturned Proposition 8, the controversial law which deemed only marriage between a man and a woman to be valid in California.
The legal process isn’t quite over, as an appeal is likely and will probably end up at the U.S. Supreme Court, but foes of Prop 8 are heartened by this week’s action by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court.

While many fans might think that George Takei’s thoughts on where Sulu should have gone would focus on the Captain’s chair, Takei felt that something else should have been developed for the character.
Playing Sulu was a “breakthrough opportunity” according to Takei. “Just to be able to play a member of the leadership team, without an accent, was hugely important. So many Asians back then were, first of all, stereotypes and spoke with a heavy accent.”

George Takei and his husband Brad Altman urge same-sex couples to complete the 2010 census and show America how many of them are in a marriage or consider themselves married even if not legally wed.
Takei, complete in a Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan uniform, urged fellow gay couples to participate in the census. “[You may ask] why I’m still wearing this Starfleet uniform,” he said. “It’s to get you to actually listen to this important message, that affects how our community and marriages such as ours are viewed by this nation.
