John Cho was satisfied with his work in Star Trek XI, and the actor who played Sulu has an opinion on what he’d like to see for the character in the next Star Trek movie.

There was plenty for Cho to do in Star Trek XI, which was gratifying, as he didn’t expect a big role in the movie. “I was happy,” he said. “When I took the role, I hadn’t read the script, even. I just knew that I wanted to be a part of it. I wasn’t sure how it’d juggle out. There were just a lot of characters to get to, it was a big story to tell, and I wasn’t expecting a huge arc.”

What Cho got was a fun fight scene. “But that scene, the fight, was spectacular,” he said. “It was something I hadn’t done before. It was new territory for me. So I was very happy with what I had, to answer your question.”

Cho was impressed when he first saw Star Trek XI. “But I can only tell you what my reaction was,” he said. “I was just screaming the first time we screened the movie. It was on the Paramount lot. The main cast was there and everyone was going nuts, as I was. I kind of forgot that I was in the movie. A lot of actors watch movies, watch themselves, in a very critical way and they start nitpicking. The movie was so exciting that I actually forgot to beat myself up. And I thought the guy playing Sulu was OK.”

What does Cho want for Sulu in the next movie? “Sulu’s battle was external in the first one,” said Cho, “and I think it’d be interesting to see him have an internal battle of some sort. That would be fun for me, for him to struggle with a decision.”

John Cho was delighted when he realized that Sulu was going to be a character who was active and not afraid to get into a fight when necessary.

As reported by TrekMovie.com, Cho was both nervous and excited about his version of Sulu. “I was thrilled he was out of his chair and getting into the mix,” said Cho. “If I had one complaint about the old show, as an Asian-American, I wanted to see Sulu get involved a little more and kick some booty. And this is it, this is happening. I can’t believe I am fulfilling my own personal dream and having Sulu shaking it.”A challenge for Cho was training for the fight scenes. “I have never done action before so it was a completely different way of working for me, where I led with my body,” he said. “Strangely, that stunt work we did a couple of months prior informed everything else. I was surprised by that. That the way my body changed as a result of doing all that training, kind of made me a different person. I was like ‘I like this, I am going with this.’ It was a little like an Academy experience for us. It informed how I sat in the chair, how I attacked every line. It was surprisingly useful.”

Although Cho enjoyed the physical aspect of the character, what would he like to see Sulu do as a character if there is a sequel? “It was great to see Sulu do an external thing,

Taking on the role of Sulu for John Cho meant worrying about honoring Star Trek and the fans.

As reported by Hollywood Today, it’s difficult to come in and take on the role of a character after another actor has done it. “I did feel pressure,” said Cho. “You’re doing a role that another actor did and you certainly don’t want to dishonor that. And I felt pressure to honor the Star Trekkers, the fans, to do right by them. They’re very passionate about this mythology and you don’t want to mess with that.”Cho feels that both fans and non-fans will be happy with Star Trek XI. “It’s a younger, more action-filled, more athletic version of Star Trek, so, I think both camps will be happy,” he said.

Wanting to help make Asians more visible, Star Trek XI is a dream role for Cho. “Star Trek is a classic Western,” said Cho. “Going westward, looking for new territory. But without the restrictions of race. So Star Trek is a dream role because it’s fulfilling one of my wishes as a kid.”

John Cho’s respect for both George Takei and the character of Sulu will keep Cho from making too many changes in the character, minus the inevitable ones due to a change in actors.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, Cho jokingly promised to make Sulu “Sexy, very sexy.” All kidding aside, Cho explained what he felt drove Sulu in Star Trek XI, and how Cho intended to portray the helmsman. “George’s Sulu was a veteran, and he was always in control of the ship,” said Cho. “And…since this is his first mission, he’s thrust into the position of helmsman by accident, and all of these things are happening. He’s not supposed to be on the ship; he’s not supposed to be doing all this stuff. I wanted this Sulu to be a little bit more innocent, a little bit younger and a little bit more caught off guard by all of this stuff. And I felt like it would be a nice way to begin that arc, since we’re going back in time.”
Although Cho has Sulu’s mannerisms down pat, he did not consciously try to imitate Takei. “George is such a iconic personality,” said Cho. “You know, he’s around, and he’s very famous, and I just felt it best not to imitate him. One, I do not have the vocal cords. They do not do that voice. They don’t do that sound. I think there’s exactly one person in the world that can do that voice. So I just felt that that would be a bad idea for me, and it would just scream imitation.”

Takei gave Cho advice on how to deal with the craziness that working on Star Trek will bring. “I asked him how he deals with Star Trek mania and what’s his method of engagement, essentially,” said Cho. “And he said, ‘You can be overwhelmed by it, or you can use it for something positive that you believe in.”
