Like his predecessor in the Sulu role, John Cho hopes for better things for his character.
Although Star Trek into Darkness has just released, Cho is already looking to the future.

Last night, MTV released a new clip from Star Trek into Darkness featuring Zachary Quinto, John Cho, and Zoe Saldana.
The clip was taken from the “volcano” scene part of the movie and contains some footage not seen before. Spoilers are in the clip.

The latest videos featuring characters from Star Trek into Darkness went online today, and the videos feature Carol Marcus and Hikaru Sulu.
The videos show some Star Trek into Darkness scenes and interviews with Alice Eve and John Cho. Mild spoilers are behind the cut.
John Cho was satisfied with his work in Star Trek XI, and the actor who played Sulu has an opinion on what he’d like to see for the character in the next Star Trek movie.
There was plenty for Cho to do in Star Trek XI, which was gratifying, as he didn’t expect a big role in the movie. “I was happy,” he said. “When I took the role, I hadn’t read the script, even. I just knew that I wanted to be a part of it. I wasn’t sure how it’d juggle out. There were just a lot of characters to get to, it was a big story to tell, and I wasn’t expecting a huge arc.”
John Cho was delighted when he realized that Sulu was going to be a character who was active and not afraid to get into a fight when necessary.
As reported by TrekMovie.com, Cho was both nervous and excited about his version of Sulu. “I was thrilled he was out of his chair and getting into the mix,” said Cho. “If I had one complaint about the old show, as an Asian-American, I wanted to see Sulu get involved a little more and kick some booty. And this is it, this is happening. I can’t believe I am fulfilling my own personal dream and having Sulu shaking it.” (more…)
Taking on the role of Sulu for John Cho meant worrying about honoring Star Trek and the fans.
As reported by Hollywood Today, it’s difficult to come in and take on the role of a character after another actor has done it. “I did feel pressure,” said Cho. “You’re doing a role that another actor did and you certainly don’t want to dishonor that. And I felt pressure to honor the Star Trekkers, the fans, to do right by them. They’re very passionate about this mythology and you don’t want to mess with that.” (more…)
A sixth action-filled Star Trek XI commercial is now airing and appears to be aimed at a larger non-Star Trek audience.
As seen at YouTube, “This is not your father’s Star Trek,” claims the new thirty-second ad for Star Trek XI. Much of the ad contains scenes shown previously, with new footage augmenting some of those scenes. (more…)
Several new Star Trek XI character posters appeared at this year’s ShoWest conference and convention, held in Las Vegas this week.
As reported by Comingsoon.net, four character posters were seen at this year’s ShoWest, including John Cho as Sulu, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, Anton Yelchin as Chekov and Simon Pegg as Scotty. (more…)
John Cho’s respect for both George Takei and the character of Sulu will keep Cho from making too many changes in the character, minus the inevitable ones due to a change in actors.
As reported by Sci Fi Wire, Cho jokingly promised to make Sulu “Sexy, very sexy.” All kidding aside, Cho explained what he felt drove Sulu in Star Trek XI, and how Cho intended to portray the helmsman. “George’s Sulu was a veteran, and he was always in control of the ship,” said Cho. “And…since this is his first mission, he’s thrust into the position of helmsman by accident, and all of these things are happening. He’s not supposed to be on the ship; he’s not supposed to be doing all this stuff. I wanted this Sulu to be a little bit more innocent, a little bit younger and a little bit more caught off guard by all of this stuff. And I felt like it would be a nice way to begin that arc, since we’re going back in time.”
