For fans of both the Star Trek and the Doctor Who franchises, the news from IDW Publishing regarding a crossover comic series should make them happy.

In May, a Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover comic series will be released.

The series will feature The Doctor, Rory, Amy, Captain Picard, Will Riker, Data, Geordie LaForge, Worf, Deanna Troi and more.

This will be the first officially sanctioned crossover for the Doctor Who universe. Star Trek has had crossovers with X-Men and the Legion of Superheroes, the latter of which is still in progress.

The game is due to be featured as the cover story in the current issue of GamePro, which is available on newsstands now.

“Star Trek, which continues the adventure that director and producer J.J. Abrams‘ envisioned with Star Trek (2009), boasts a story filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy. And for the first time ever, players are cast as Captain James T. Kirk and Spock in an unprecedented co-op experience.”

The awards won by Star Trek include:

Star Trek has received favorable reviews from critics. “This game rocks,” said IGN. It’s fast, intense and filled with action. It’s delightfully innovative, full of moments so surprisingly fun and unique that you’ll wonder why no other game has ever thought of them.”

The Star Trek game, due out in 2012, is set in the Abrams Star Trek XI universe.

The teaser trailer, shown below, was released at yesterday’s Sony E3 press conference.

Sony also announced that Paramount is also working on a Move peripheral for the game based on the Star Trek XI Phaser design, and that there will be an exclusively-downloadable prequel game available for the PS3.

The game, called Star Trek, can be seen at the International Casino Exhibition (ICE) 2011 which is being held from January 25-27 at London’s Earl Court Exhibition Centre.

The game is described as “a thirty-payline slot that features authentic visuals and footage from the film. Players are whisked to the bridge of the Enterprise and can control the transporter room. Futuristic free spin bonuses are based on familiar Star Trek officers and players spin until they win. All wins are tripled in Kirk’s Bonus, Uhura’s Bonus includes super scatter pays, growing multipliers are to be accumulated in Scotty’s Bonus and Wild Spock symbols are added to the reels in Spock’s Bonus.”

“Star Trek is a major release for IGT and has been developed as a key project over many months to ensure strong brand and game alignment that will excite players,” said Oliver Lofthouse, who is the executive director of EMEA, Interactive. “We think Star Trek fans around the world will truly enjoy playing this online slot game when it goes live in the coming months as it immerses them in both the gaming experience and the Star Trek universe.”

Trek fan Tony Alleyne had been fighting the unexplained mold and fungus without success until the police paid a visit to the apartment directly below his. “I had no idea what was causing it,” he said, “but there was mold in the bathroom and the transporter. It was a nightmare.”

It took two years and £30,000 to turn his apartment into a Star Trek Voyager-themed residence, and even more money was spent to try to eradicate the mold and fungus problem. “I’ve had to remove the paneling and replace some lighting,” said Alleyne. “I sugar-soaped the surfaces but nothing worked.”

It turns out Alleyne’s downstairs neighbor was growing marijuana in his apartment, using hydroponic growing equipment. “The police came and knocked on the door of the place below and took away twenty-five cannabis plants and the equipment,” said Alleyne. “I couldn’t believe there was something like that going on right below me. When the police took the hydroponics away all that stuff looked as hi-tech as my place.

“It takes a lot of heat and humidity to grow cannabis and having that going on below me was causing the problem with the mould.”

Now that the pot-growing enterprise has been shut down, Alleyne hopes that his mold problems will come to an end. “Since the raid I’ve cleaned up two thirds of the flat and there’s been no more fungus,” he said. “I am now re-paneling and repainting the place and, hopefully, it will be fine. It’s probably cost a few thousand pounds to do everything and I’m not finished yet.”

Alleyne’s thirty-one-year old neighbor has been arrested and is currently out on bail.

Paramount Home Entertainment Inc. (PHE) and Redbox Automated Retail, LLC (Redbox), announced that they have entered into a trial license program that will provide Redbox access to Paramount Pictures DVD releases through the end of 2009.

“This agreement is a positive step with Paramount,” said Mitch Lowe, Redbox president. “The agreement ensures that our customers will have increased access to some of the biggest titles of the year.”

After the four-month trial period, PHE may extend the program to 2014, with an “out” clause after two years.

Redbox kiosks are found in McDonald’s outlets and other retail outlets such as convenience and grocery stores and Walmart.

As reported by Cake Wrecks, creative fans have designed cakes based on the various Star Trek TV shows or movies.

Amongst them is the Star Trek Enterprise 1701 refit cake created by brothers Edward and Antoni Frys of European Cake Gallery. Their Enterprise refit cake, seenhere, took days to make, with the support structure alone taking three days.
The support base for the refit Enterprise was made of foam, but the nacelles were made from an edible mixture of Rice Krispie treats and white chocolate.

Other cakes are more traditional. One wedding cake had a Star Trek couple topper, as seen here, with a male Vulcan groom and a female Klingon bride. The real life bridal couple had a Star Trek wedding where the groom did portray a Vulcan and the bride was dressed up as a Klingon female.

Another cake had a large gold Federation symbol

Abrams‘s team I want to create another Star Trek series and have an idea that I’m kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the ’60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin.Fuller was responsible for writing twenty-two Star Trek episodes; two of which were for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Empok Nor, The Darkness and the Light) and the other twenty for Star Trek: Voyager. Since his Trek days, Fuller has worked on Heroes as a writer and co-executive producer, and he was the creator of the short-lived award-winning Pushing Daisies. Pushing Daisies told the tale of a man who had the power to bring dead people back to life with a touch.
