Working on both independent and action-filled blockbusters, Anton Yelchin (Chekov) has been fortunate in his roles.

While fans enjoy lots of action in a movie, it’s the characters that hold and catch their attention. “In the best sort of spectacle action movies, character comes first and that’s why you buy the action,” said Yelchin. “I got lucky with [Terminator: Salvation and Star Trek XI] because there was a lot of character work to be done. Terminator was challenging and interesting and definitely there was a lot of work to do, which is great because we don’t often expect to go into these movies and have challenging work to do. But I was lucky with Star Trek as well because it was the same thing. There was this whole other character to work with, different, totally different, different physicality, more joyous and light, but the same idea. They were both challenging.”

Working on both films will help Yelchin with future projects. “I think that being in two films like this helps you to do other work,” he explained. “There are actors that I really admire, actors that can do both. I think that you can do it. As long as you stick to finding interesting characters and believing in them, you can do that.”

Yelchin likes to work and is not a fan of down time between movies. “It is a weird transition period unless you have a job right away when you can start working again,” he said. “When you don’t, you start feeling like you have to get back into your life and adjust to not being with the people you just spent months with and the people that you have come to care about and that have become your friends. You have to adjust to not working really hard and not having a definite purpose to your life. I feel like every time I am on set, there is a goal, there is an objective and there is a life to be lived.”

A list with the top hundred greatest sci-fi movies includes three Star Trek offerings.

As reported by Total Sci-Fi Online, movies on the list include a movie made back in 1902 as well as modern-day offerings such as Star Trek XI.
The top five science-fiction movies are: Blade Runner, 2001:A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Alien and Metropolis (released in 1927.)

Three Star Trek movies made the list of top one hundred movies. At number nineteen was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. “The best Trek movie by miles, this is an edgy, exciting and often very funny movie that feels much more than an extended TV episode. The makers even had the guts to kill Spock! OK, so they did bring him back in the next one…”

At number sixty-seven was Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. “The second-best Trek movie is also directed by Nicholas Meyer. This one’s a thrilling, funny conspiracy thriller that sees the aging Starfleet heroes attempt to avert intergalactic war. Hugely enjoyable.”

Finally, barely making the list at number ninety-three was Star Trek XI. “J.J. Abrams pulled off the not inconsiderable challenge of making Star Trek popular again – even cool – in a film that manages to appeal to Trekkers and newbies alike. Thrilling action sequences, charming performances, sex appeal and unobtrusive in-jokes.”

Patrick Stewart, who is appearing in Waiting for Godot, took time out from his busy schedule to go and see Star Trek XI.

As reported by The Yorkshire Post, Stewart took a few family members along to see the latest Star Trek movie. “”Yesterday, I took my grandchildren to see the new Star Trek movie,” he said. “There were three movie trailers, one for the new Terminator movie, one for the new Harry Potter and one for a Pixar animated movie. All the trailers sounded and looked the same, full of standardized levels of noise, violence and special effects and I thought, ‘My God, nothing would attract me to any of these.’” “I love animated movies,” Stewart continued. ” and I especially love Pixar but I weary of standardization. I don’t know what’s happened…but I better not go on, you never know, they might want to cast me in one of them.”

Star Trek XI was given the thumbs up by Stewart. “I loved it,” he raved. “I absolutely loved it. It was a very, very odd experience to be in the cinema watching a new Star Trek movie that I wasn’t in. Not only that, but with the exception of Leonard Nimoy I didn’t know any of the cast…but, it’s Star Trek. They’ve taken some quite innovative decisions but it’s absolutely essential, right down the middle Star Trek. I got a great kick out of it.”

Stewart had praise for Chris Pine, who also plays a Starfleet captain. “He’s brilliant,” said Stewart. “He is charming, truthful, funny and utterly delightful.”

Star Trek XI has been beamed up to the International Space Station for the viewing pleasure of the three-man crew.

As reported by Universe Today, Paramount sent a copy of Star Trek XI to NASA’s Mission Control, who then uplinked the movie to the International Space Station, orbiting two-hundred-and-twenty miles above the Earth. NASA astronaut Michael Barratt is currently on the station, as well as Russian Cosmonaut Gennady Padalka and Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata.

“I remember watching the original Star Trek series and, like many of my NASA co-workers, was inspired by the idea of people from all nations coming together to explore space,” said Barratt. “Star Trek blended adventure, discovery, intelligence and story telling that assumes a positive future for humanity. The International Space Station is a real step in that direction, with many nations sharing in an adventure the world can be proud of.”

The crew will watch the film on a laptop computer in the Unity module.

Star Trek has been viewed in space before. Former station astronaut Greg Chamitoff and his crewmates made watching Star Trek a weekly event during their time on the ISS.

Star Trek XI Director J.J. Abrams is open to the idea of including William Shatner in a sequel, or perhaps revisiting an old Star Trek foe.

As reported by MTV, with a new playing field, anything can happen. “The fun of this [new alternate Trek reality] is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands,” explained Abrams. “It’s not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series. Believe me, whether it’s William Shatner or Khan … it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas.” “One of the reasons we wanted to break with the original Star Trek timeline was it felt restrictive,” Abrams added. “The idea, now that we are in an independent timeline, allows us to use any of the ingredients from the past, or come up with brand-new ones, to make potential stories.”

Khan Noonien Singh has also come up as a potential storyline for the future. “It’ll be fun to hear what Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] are thinking about Khan,” said Abrams. “The fun of this timeline is arguing that different stories, with the same characters, could be equally if not more compelling than what’s been told before. [Khan and Kirk] exist, and while their history may not be exactly as people are familiar with, I would argue that a person’s character is what it is. Certain people are destined to cross paths and come together, and Khan is out there … even if he doesn’t have the same issues.”

With Kirk’s ultimate fate in the alternative timeline unknown and different than in the original timeline, there is no reason why Kirk couldn’t live to be much older, which opens the door for a possible Shatner appearance in a future film. “”I wouldn’t rule out anything,” said Abrams. “The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have the restrictions we had coming into this one. And one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead.”

Don’t worry about canon, says Walter Koenig, Star Trek‘s original Chekov.

As reported by the TrekZone Network, Koenig encourages fans not to prejudge Star Trek XI or get overly concerned with past Star Trek history. “I think if [fans] just put away any prejudice and not worry about canon they’ll have a good time,” he said. “You know, nothing is carved into stone. Star Trek isn’t based on historical facts. It’s just imaginary, creation. People’s imagination. It’s fictitious. So, if they take something and change it, go with it, accept it for what it’s like and have a good time!” While Star Trek XI was filming, Koenig visited the set one day and met Anton Yelchin, who is playing Chekov in the movie. “We talked a little about the role,” said Koenig. “I told him that he has to make it his own. And I don’t think it’s a good idea to try to imitate me. I don’t think that was his intention anyway.”

“[Yelchin's] a very pleasant young man,” said Koenig. “And his career is already going very well. He’s done several movies.”

Koenig doesn’t worry about Yelchin’s ability to do the Russian accent. “He is originally, his parents are from Russia,” explained Koenig. “He’s been born there but he’s been living in the States since he’s a few months old. His grandparents are very, very much Russian. So I think he got some help with the dialect from his own family.”

InAlienable, Koenig’s movie project released last year as a pay-per-download video on the Internet, will soon be available on DVD. Fans who purchase the movie will receive a free copy of Of Gods and Men. InAlienable will be released in a novel form if Koenig can find a publisher. “It is written,” he said. I am trying to sell it. I’m trying to get a publisher to buy it.”

The odds are slim for a Quantum Leap movie, says Scott Bakula, who played Sam Beckett for five seasons on the time-jumping show.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, speaking to Quantum Leap fans at “Leap Back,” a convention held in North Hollywood, California last week, Bakula explained why a Quantum Leap movie is probably not in the cards. “I think each day it becomes slimmer and slimmer, certainly for Dean [Stockwell] and I to be a part of [a Quantum Leap movie,] said Bakula. “But I think [Series Creator Don Bellisario] simplified the situation. There are all kinds of rights issues that are looming and problematic. It’s not as simple as Don wants to get some money together and make the movie. …[But] you never know.”Bakula, who captained the Enterprise as Jonathan Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise for four years, spoke about his feelings about the new Star Trek movie. “I’m dying to see it,” he said. “It looks like they’ve found a way to modernize it, and hopefully in a way that will [work.]“

Making it works means making it relevant for today’s audiences. “I was talking to my eighteen-year-old son,” said Bakula, “and we were looking at the billboard, and I asked him, ‘What do you think of that?’ He said, ‘When I first saw it, I was like, ‘Oh, another Star Trek movie. Those movies are so … ” And he didn’t have the word. I said, you know, ‘Dated?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ It feels dated to an 18-year-old.”

In addition to updating the look and feel to attract modern audiences, keeping the die-hard fans is important too if Star Trek XI is to be successful. According to Bakula, that is difficult if the fan base is resistant to change. “We were trying to make that bridge with our series, and we had resistance,” he explained. “There was no question that some of the Star Trek fan base was not ready to go there. They just didn’t want to do it. … They’re not willing to give it any slack. If they don’t like it, they’re vocal about it. But if they like it, then you’re made.”
