Yelchin: Character Comes First

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Working on both independent and action-filled blockbusters, Anton Yelchin (Chekov) has been fortunate in his roles.

While fans enjoy lots of action in a movie, it’s the characters that hold and catch their attention. “In the best sort of spectacle action movies, character comes first and that’s why you buy the action,” said Yelchin. “I got lucky with [Terminator: Salvation and Star Trek XI] because there was a lot of character work to be done. Terminator was challenging and interesting and definitely there was a lot of work to do, which is great because we don’t often expect to go into these movies and have challenging work to do. But I was lucky with Star Trek as well because it was the same thing. There was this whole other character to work with, different, totally different, different physicality, more joyous and light, but the same idea. They were both challenging.”

Stewart: Pine Was Brilliant!

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Patrick Stewart, who is appearing in Waiting for Godot, took time out from his busy schedule to go and see Star Trek XI.

As reported by The Yorkshire Post, Stewart took a few family members along to see the latest Star Trek movie. “”Yesterday, I took my grandchildren to see the new Star Trek movie,” he said. “There were three movie trailers, one for the new Terminator movie, one for the new Harry Potter and one for a Pixar animated movie. All the trailers sounded and looked the same, full of standardized levels of noise, violence and special effects and I thought, ‘My God, nothing would attract me to any of these.'” (more…)

Star Trek XII: Khan? Shatner?

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Star Trek XI Director J.J. Abrams is open to the idea of including William Shatner in a sequel, or perhaps revisiting an old Star Trek foe.

As reported by MTV, with a new playing field, anything can happen. “The fun of this [new alternate Trek reality] is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands,” explained Abrams. “It’s not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series. Believe me, whether it’s William Shatner or Khan … it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas.” (more…)

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Don’t worry about canon, says Walter Koenig, Star Trek‘s original Chekov.

As reported by the TrekZone Network, Koenig encourages fans not to prejudge Star Trek XI or get overly concerned with past Star Trek history. “I think if [fans] just put away any prejudice and not worry about canon they’ll have a good time,” he said. “You know, nothing is carved into stone. Star Trek isn’t based on historical facts. It’s just imaginary, creation. People’s imagination. It’s fictitious. So, if they take something and change it, go with it, accept it for what it’s like and have a good time!” (more…)

Bakula: No Leaping Back

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

The odds are slim for a Quantum Leap movie, says Scott Bakula, who played Sam Beckett for five seasons on the time-jumping show.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, speaking to Quantum Leap fans at “Leap Back,” a convention held in North Hollywood, California last week, Bakula explained why a Quantum Leap movie is probably not in the cards. “I think each day it becomes slimmer and slimmer, certainly for Dean [Stockwell] and I to be a part of [a Quantum Leap movie,] said Bakula. “But I think [Series Creator Don Bellisario] simplified the situation. There are all kinds of rights issues that are looming and problematic. It’s not as simple as Don wants to get some money together and make the movie. …[But] you never know.” (more…)

Orci And Kurtzman: Star Trek Vs. Star Wars

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The co-writers of Star Trek XI have figured out Star Trek’s missing ingredient.

As reported by, Star Trek XI Co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman feel that although a Christmas release for Star Trek XI would have been fine, the movie is strong enough to be a summer hit. “Obviously we were comfortable for Christmas, because that was its niche,” said Orci. “But we all feel it can sustain what it needs to sustain in the summer. One of the things we said early on is that Star Wars and Star Trek are always the ones being compared to each other by certain people. Why is Star Wars able to surpass all of that even though they’re all in space and some characters are similar? It just felt like Star Wars had a little more rock and roll than Star Trek had.” (more…)
