Star Trek XI‘s Zachary Quinto speculates on the future of Spock in Star Trek 2.
With the destruction of Vulcan in Star Trek XI, there will be pressure on Spock to help his race. “I would imagine (this is just speculative),” said Quinto, “his planet’s been destroyed, he feels a real imperative to rebuild his race. But he’s in love with a human. There’s probably some potential conflict in that dynamic, I would not be surprised, and I would be intrigued and excited by that if that were the case.”

In a recent interview, Leonard Nimoy explained why people liked Spock and what playing the half-Vulcan, half-Human character meant career-wise, as well as why he decided to play Spock again in J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek XI.
There was a time when Nimoy struggled to find acting jobs that weren’t related to the pointy-eared Vulcan character that he had made famous. “During that period (mid-1970s), I had a struggle,” he said. “I was busy. I had no problem finding work. But the work pretty much was related to the Spock character. I was, on the one hand, happy to be working because I know what it’s like to be an out-of-work actor. But at the same time I was hoping to broaden my scope, and eventually I did.”

Leonard Nimoy said this week he was happy the latest Trek film finally provided his character with the closure he felt had been lacking — so happy, that he wouldn’t even be opposed to playing Spock again.
Nimoy said this in a new interview with Starland, although he immediately cautioned the odds of him being asked to return aren’t very high: “I have no illusions on whether or not they need me. They decided that they wanted to make this film using Spock as kind of an anchor for the story, which I think worked very, very well. They don’t have to do that again. If they decide they have a role for me to play I would be very interested in talking to them about it. But I have every reason to believe that they have established a whole new set of characters and they can sail very well without me and that’s fine. Either way is good with me. I am very gratified that this has happened.”

As reported by MTV, one of the scenes provoking much discussion by fans is the destruction of Vulcan, one of the founding members of the Federation. “The scariest thing about [destroying Vulcan] was us having to pitch that to Leonard Nimoy,” explained Kurtzman. “‘Hi, I know we just met, but let me tell you about what happens to your home planet.’” (more…)

In addition to the mental demands of playing a character, there were also physical preparations for Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto to complete before they would be ready to step into their roles as Kirk and Spock.
As reported by The Cinema Source, Pine paid attention to the small details of Kirk, so that his portrayal of Kirk would be similar to that of William Shatner. “You watch the show, you know what Kirk does,” he said. “What resonated for me were certain physical things. There’s a way that he holds his body and moves about the deck of the ship that’s very, it’s almost theatrical, you see his kind of theatrical training in his gait and in the way he carries his body, in the way he sits in the chair.” (more…)
