Star Trek XI‘s Zachary Quinto speculates on the future of Spock in Star Trek 2.

With the destruction of Vulcan in Star Trek XI, there will be pressure on Spock to help his race. “I would imagine (this is just speculative),” said Quinto, “his planet’s been destroyed, he feels a real imperative to rebuild his race. But he’s in love with a human. There’s probably some potential conflict in that dynamic, I would not be surprised, and I would be intrigued and excited by that if that were the case.”

Quinto trusts the writers when it comes to Spock and where the character (and his romance) will go in Star Trek 2. “I have such implicit trust in all of those guys: Damon, Bob and Alex, and J.J.,” he said. “I feel like they’re going to take us where we need to go. And we’re going to follow them whole-heartedly.”

But what about the Spock-Uhura romance? Will it survive? “I do think [so],” said Quinto. “I don’t see how they could just drop it. It may be fraught, I don’t know!”

Spock will feel the need to help when it comes to rebuilding the Vulcan race. “He’s not the only Vulcan, I think I said, ‘Of my planet’s nearly six billion inhabitants, approximately ten thousand have survived,’” said Quinto. “He’s not the only one. But the odds aren’t great. He has a bit of a cultural imperative to [help].

“I think he’s going to spend a lot more time doing the logical thing. Which is to help repopulate, help support, and help rebuild the race of people. His father was full Vulcan, and he has a responsibility there, and he loves his father very much.’

In a recent interview, Leonard Nimoy explained why people liked Spock and what playing the half-Vulcan, half-Human character meant career-wise, as well as why he decided to play Spock again in J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek XI.

There was a time when Nimoy struggled to find acting jobs that weren’t related to the pointy-eared Vulcan character that he had made famous. “During that period (mid-1970s), I had a struggle,” he said. “I was busy. I had no problem finding work. But the work pretty much was related to the Spock character. I was, on the one hand, happy to be working because I know what it’s like to be an out-of-work actor. But at the same time I was hoping to broaden my scope, and eventually I did.”

But Nimoy came to terms with Spock and is willing to say what made Spock tick and why people were attracted to the character. “Well, I’ll tell you something,” he said. “I came to believe finally that Spock was at least as human, and perhaps more human, than any of the other characters on the show. Spock’s condition was a quintessentially human condition.

“I think that’s maybe the underlying secret to why so many people identify with him, because he had this inner life that so many people recognize, which is the struggle between our logic and our emotion; our right or left brain. We all, to some degree, have this process to deal with. Particularly young people who are in their formative years, trying to figure out how you’re supposed to function in relationships, in your career, in your personal choices. It’s a condition that’s easily recognizable.”

Why did Nimoy say “Yes” to playing Spock again after so many years? “[J.J. Abrams] asked me if I would come to a meeting,” explained Nimoy. “And this was before they started writing, I think. I met with him and his writers. The conversation, frankly, was actually moving to me, because it had been a number of years since I’d been asked to do anything with Star Trek.

“And here comes a guy named J.J. Abrams who has a lot of cachet, I thought, a very good filmmaker and his writers, and they’re telling me about their sense of Star Trek and their sense of the Spock character. I thought it was profound, frankly. I thought, ‘Wow, these guys really get it.’”

Nimoy will be appearing at the Dallas Comic Con this weekend.

The Star Trek Christmas ornaments for 2011 have been unveiled and fans of Spock will enjoy two of the three ornaments.

The 2011 ornaments focus on the original series this year, with one character ornament, one scene from an original series show and a ship ornament.

The character ornament is Mr. Spock. Sculpted by Anita Marra Rogers, this ornament of the Vulcan Science Officer holding his tricorder is the second in the Star Trek Legends series.

A “Mirror, Mirror” ornament features a scene from the original series episode of the same name. The scene is the Mirror Universe Sickbay and M.U. Spock is extracting information from Dr. McCoy in a mind meld. The ornament, sculpted by Valerie Shanks, includes dialogue from that scene.

Finally, Romulan lovers will be pleased with the ship ornament for 2011. Lynn Norton has sculpted a Romulan Bird of Prey. The ornament features lights in the ship’s plasma torpedo launcher and an underside decorated with a colorful bird.

The ornaments will go on sale in July of 2011.

One of the questions regarding Star Trek XII concerns the Spock-Uhura romance and where, if anywhere, the romance will go.

Trek fans were surprised by the romance between the half-Vulcan Spock and human Uhura in Star Trek XI, and now they wonder what will happen now that Vulcans have become an endangered race.
Zoë Saldana (Uhura) also wonders how the romance will be handled in the Abrams sequel, hoping that the romance continues. “There was a huge acceptance and excitement with what J.J. and the writers did with that twist,” she said. “What they did was a huge gamble, and when it worked, it worked really, really well.”

But events of the movie may force a change in that relationship. “It would be interesting to see what they are going to do with it,” said Saldana. “I really hope they keep continuing to explore it, but at the same time too … I could be wrong, but I thought Vulcans only mate every seven years. So now that the planet has been extinguished, it’s kind of interesting. Can Spock mate with a non-Vulcan?”

Saldana thought that given the destruction of most of the Vulcan race, Spock might need to find a Vulcan female instead of Uhura to help perpetuate the species, because any children that Uhura and Spock might have would only be one-quarter Vulcan. “I’m not a Vulcan,” she said. “Now there’s no Vulcan planet.”

A cat with a unique foot is being compared to a certain logical race of Star Trek beings.

Spock the cat was born with a malformed paw, which looks very much like the Vulcan hand salute.

Fans in the Atlanta area on the lookout for a cat can adopt the two-year-old domestic short hair/mix female cat who is at the Atlanta Humane Society, or choose one of almost three dozen other cats.

Spock is said to have a sweet personality, and she loves to get the attention of humans by grabbing them with her unique paw.
