Although there is a movie script “in the works” for Quantum Leap, Scott Bakula is not involved with the project.

Bakula told fans attending last July’s Comic-Con that a script was supposedly being written by Quantum Leap Creator/Executive Producer Donald Bellisario for a new Quantum Leap film. His Quantum Leap fan-base loved the news, but it turns out that (so far) Bakula won’t be part of the new movie, if it is made.

“I regret that I said anything having to do with a movie script in the works,” he said. “It ended up agitating the masses, and I have to do disclaimers everywhere. There is a script in the works. Don [Bellisario] is part of it. I’m not. It’s become this whole other thing.”

In other Bakula news, the former Captain Archer was interviewed by Runner’s World. Bakula, an avid runner, talked about fitness while on the set of Star Trek: Enterprise. “We had a great gym,” he said. “My trainer put a lot of it together. We had a bunch of cool stuff.”

Sometimes Bakula would use his running time to plan out how to speak his lines on Enterprise. “I used to figure out long Enterprise speeches on the run when we were shooting that,” he said. “You’re working the whole thing out. It happens in different ways. If you’ve got a long monologue you’ve got to deliver, you have to have it memorized; for me, then you figure out how it’s going to go—I know how I want to hit it.”

Bakula hopes to participate in the Boston Marathon next spring.

It has been five years since Star Trek: Enterprise ended and Scott Bakula shares his opinion on what was good and what went wrong. Plus: Will a Quantum Leap movie happen?

In spite of Star Trek: Enterprise ending too soon, plus the ending which was more of a Star Trek: The Next Generation show, Bakula looks back fondly on his time as Captain Archer. “Oh, it was a fantastic experience,” he said. “I had a ball. We had some fantastically talented people on all sides of the camera. We had great actors, tremendously creative effects people and set people and makeup people and… It was fantastic. You were working with some of the most talented people and ground-breakers in the industry, and I got to do it for four years.”

Like many others, including fans and actors alike, Bakula wasn’t keen on the ending. “I have to say that when I first read the script I was off-put by it,” he said. “I had a long talk with Rick (Berman) and Brannon (Braga) about it and they explained their idea and philosophy to me. I don’t know that I ever … Gosh, the end of anything is always hard to write. It was a little odd, but that was their call.”

What would Enterprise have been like, had it had the full seven year run? “Things were dictated by the times, by it being post-9/11, but I wanted us to hopefully get back to having a little bit more fun on the show and to get out of that whole Xindi thing,” said Bakula. “That would have been fun. I think we were pointing in that direction. I think the group was ready to go. The cast was ready to get there, and I think we could have had a blast. But we just didn’t get to go there. And I wanted Archer to kind of grow up and lighten up a little bit.”

There are rumors that Bakula’s other well-known show, Quantum Leap, might be revived as a movie soon. According to Bakula, “I have spoken with Don [Bellisario] and he’s been approached by a producer to write a script and produce a Quantum Leap film. He’s intending to do that and has begun work on it. And my understanding is that Dean [Stockwell] and I may have a small cameo element to the movie. But it hasn’t been written yet. So we’ll see.”

If J.J. Abrams called Bakula and offered an Archer part in the next movie, would Bakula be interested? “Yes,” he said.

The odds are slim for a Quantum Leap movie, says Scott Bakula, who played Sam Beckett for five seasons on the time-jumping show.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, speaking to Quantum Leap fans at “Leap Back,” a convention held in North Hollywood, California last week, Bakula explained why a Quantum Leap movie is probably not in the cards. “I think each day it becomes slimmer and slimmer, certainly for Dean [Stockwell] and I to be a part of [a Quantum Leap movie,] said Bakula. “But I think [Series Creator Don Bellisario] simplified the situation. There are all kinds of rights issues that are looming and problematic. It’s not as simple as Don wants to get some money together and make the movie. …[But] you never know.”Bakula, who captained the Enterprise as Jonathan Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise for four years, spoke about his feelings about the new Star Trek movie. “I’m dying to see it,” he said. “It looks like they’ve found a way to modernize it, and hopefully in a way that will [work.]“

Making it works means making it relevant for today’s audiences. “I was talking to my eighteen-year-old son,” said Bakula, “and we were looking at the billboard, and I asked him, ‘What do you think of that?’ He said, ‘When I first saw it, I was like, ‘Oh, another Star Trek movie. Those movies are so … ” And he didn’t have the word. I said, you know, ‘Dated?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ It feels dated to an 18-year-old.”

In addition to updating the look and feel to attract modern audiences, keeping the die-hard fans is important too if Star Trek XI is to be successful. According to Bakula, that is difficult if the fan base is resistant to change. “We were trying to make that bridge with our series, and we had resistance,” he explained. “There was no question that some of the Star Trek fan base was not ready to go there. They just didn’t want to do it. … They’re not willing to give it any slack. If they don’t like it, they’re vocal about it. But if they like it, then you’re made.”
