J.J. Abrams, Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana traveled to Seoul, South Korea to promote Star Trek XI.

As reported by the Korea Herald, Abrams, Pine and Saldana were in Seoul yesterday to promote Star Trek XI, showing twenty minutes of the film to those in attendance, and speaking about working on the movie to the audience of journalists, distributors and other interested parties. As he has done before, Abrams emphasized that Star Trek XI is for new fans, not established ones. “We made this film not for Trekkies but for future fans of Star Trek,” he said. “The studio wanted to give the film a fresh start and I was originally brought in as a producer, but upon reading the script, I saw so much potential and possibility that the original had failed to realize due to technological constraints so I got very greedy and I decided to direct it myself.”

Pine explained how he approached the role of a younger James T. Kirk and how Pine prepared for the role. “I began watching the original series pretty feverishly cause I knew I only had a limited amount of time to prepare for the role,” he said, “and after getting halfway through the first and second season I wasn’t doing myself any favors by trying to pick up on the mannerisms of William Shatner and the minutiae of the Star Trek world. I would have created a character that was more impersonation than an original incarnation. J.J.’s prescription for realizing the role, and this goes for all of us, was to create our own and not worry too much about obeying the laws of the original Star Trek world.”

Saldana, who plays Uhura in Star Trek XI, spoke of the attraction of the character for her. “I do have a gravitational pull towards characters that are strong,” she explained. “I think there are similarities between Uhura and myself. It is conceivable to believe that some of you leaks into the roles actors play and I certainly hope that the things that did manage to leak in[to] my interpretation of my character in the film.”

The original article is located at the Korea Herald, but be cautious in going to the site, as virus warnings pop up when trying to access the site.
