Pegg: Fun Hanging With Cruise

While filming Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, in which Star Trek XI‘s Simon Pegg plays field agent Benji Dunn, the actor took time to have a little fun during breaks in filming.

Pegg and Tom Cruise went go-carting during a break from shooting Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. “It was such fun,” said Pegg. “It’s nice to penetrate the noxious cloud of myth that surrounds him.”

A new trailer for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, in which Star Trek XI’s Simon Pegg plays Detective Thompson, is now available online.

In The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Tintin and his friends set off to find a treasure left behind by Tintin’s ancestor Sir Francis Haddock. Pegg and Nick Frost will play bumbling detectives Thompson and Thomson.

In a new video interview at, Simon Pegg spoke about being a Star Trek fan and how he wants to play Scotty in Star Trek 2.

Unlike many Trek fans, Pegg didn’t start out with either the original series or with Star Trek: The Next Generation. He entered the world of Star Trek while watching the animated series as a child. “It was my gateway into Star Trek because I didn’t actually start watching the original series until I was about nine,” he said. “I definitely came across the cartoon first.”

In a recent interview to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of Paul, Simon Pegg discussed the possibility of a sequel to the sci-fi comedy.

Pegg and Nick Frost have already been mulling over the idea of a sequel and what it would take to make that sequel. “The reason I would make a sequel to Paul,” said Pegg, “and I’m sure Greg (Mottola) would probably agree, is because, ultimately, I don’t do my job for anybody but myself.”

Even though there is talk about a delay in the release date of Star Trek 2, production on the movie is supposed to begin this fall according to Simon Pegg.

Pegg made the comment about Star Trek 2 as part of an interview promoting Paul, which is releasing today on Blu-ray and DVD.

“[Filming starts] this year, as far as I know,” he said. “It’s pretty much common knowledge that it’s hopefully shooting in the autumn.”

Pegg: Paying Homage To Other Movies

Paul, Simon Pegg‘s newest movie about a pair of pair of sci-fi fans (Pegg and Nick Frost) headed to Comic-Con, contains plenty of references to other sci-fi franchises, including Star Trek.

The references are sure to please science fiction fans, but Pegg is also aware that trying to please everyone is a futile effort which often results in an inferior movie. “The trouble is that a lot of the time people try to just blanket appeal to everyone,” said Pegg, “and in doing so, the material just gets dumber and broader and things end up being bland because it’s obviously a desperate attempt to please everyone.”

For Simon Pegg, signing on with Star Trek meant facing the fact that it might lead to him being typecast.

When Pegg got the call for the role of Scotty, he had to think about whether taking the part would be good or harmful for his career. “I deliberated for a few days,” said Pegg. “J.J. [Abrams] just dropped it on me out of the blue. He kind of just emailed with it. I didn’t expect to get it.”
