Star Trek XI Co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have added even more to their already full plates with word that they are taking on a product based on a comic series published by IDW Publishing.

The pair will work on an adaptation of Locke & Key, a comic series written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez. Locke & Key is set in the village of Lovecraft and is the story of the Locke family, who move to their estate (Keyhouse), after the murder of the head of the family by a deranged high school student.

Keyhouse has “fantastic doors” (opened by special keys) “that transform all who dare to walk through them,” including a door that turns one into a ghost after walking through it and a black door that must “never be opened.”

The estate is also home to a “hate-filled and relentless creature,” Dodge, “that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all,’ the black door.

Kurtzman and Orci will produce the product through their development deal with DreamWorks.

But they were very thoughtful about the kind of commitment they were making. They didn’t want to overpromise.”

“We’ve been excited about going back into TV, but wanted to wait until the feature side of our company was on its feet,” said Kurtzman.

“One of the things that drew us back to TV was the idea that we could do the kind of stories that we’re not known for in features,” said Orci. “From sci-fi to procedurals to medical genres, those are all the kind of shows that we love.”

The deal with 20th Century Fox begins on March 1.

In a question and answer session after the showing of Star Trek XI at the Beverly Hills WGA theater on Wednesday night, Star Trek XI Co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman talked about Star Trek XII.

The two writers covered familiar ground but also spoke about the next movie, including setting, villains and pressure to make a good movie.

One comment may set some fan fears at ease. The duo doesn’t want to be repetitive in their storytelling. “We would never do a remake,” said Orci.”

As for the timeframe of the movie, “it will be some time in the five year mission,” said Orci. “But that is a question. Should we pick them up immediately the next day or should it be later, we are still discussing that.”

Plenty of talk has centered around the villain of the next movie, and the pair spoke about the importance of the villain. “I think our idea on this is that the first of any series is about them [the crew] coming together or the formation,” said Kurtzman. “I couldn’t really tell you what Jeff Bridges was doing in Iron Man, but it doesn’t matter at all because it is all about Iron Man becoming Iron Man. Whereas I think sequels are very much about the villain. Because while [in the first one] the villain serves to bring the crew together, the second one I think has to be a true challenging of what that family is about. That is why Wrath of Khan was so amazing. Khan tested each one of them and ultimately asked for the ultimately sacrifice, and that is why that movie held up so well.”

Writing the sequel is more stressful than writing Star Trek XI was. “Frankly I feel more pressure because we were so confident when we came up with the idea of how to bridge canon, and yet free ourselves from canon,” said Orci. “Now we have no excuses for anything, now we are free. Now we don’t have the benefit of low expectations.”

“It is true,” added Kurtzman. “I feel much more pressure.”

CBS has said OK to an updated version of the famous cop series set in Hawaii.

Back in October, it was announced that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were working on a remake of the classic Hawaii Five-O series for CBS, teaming with CSI:New York Producer Peter Lenkov.

Kurtzman, Orci and Lenkov will all be executive producers on the updated version of the show which may center on Steve McGarrett’s son Chris, who succeeded his father as head of the branch of the Hawaiian State Police.

The original Hawaii Five-O was centered on an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police headed by Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) and answerable only to Governor Paul Jameson, played by Richard Denning.

The show ran from 1968-1980 and was instantly identifiable by its opening sequence and music (composed by Morton Stevens) and “Book ‘em, Danno,” a phrase often used at the end of an episode when it was time to arrest the bad guy(s). “Danno” was Danny “Danno” Williams, played by James MacArthur.

Co-writer Damon Lindelof confirmed that he and co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will begin work on Star Trek XII once their work on Lost is finished.

“We’re going to start probably in April once the writing on Lost is done,” he said. “Trek will come out in 2012 at some point, so we’ve still got a little bit of time, but we’ve been talking about it. We just haven’t been writing.”

No word yet on when production on the sequel would begin.

In other Star Trek XII news, J.J. Abrams couldn’t resist a chance to joke about the subject of the next Star Trek movie while on the National Board of Review. “I have to admit, the [sequel] is really all about the Gorn (Green lizard-like aliens from the original series episode Arena). We just thought it would be fun…to go Gorn.”

“Yes we have some ideas about that,” said Abrams, referring to Star Trek XII. “We’re working on something right now with that and again, you know, it’s early stages.”

With Star Trek XI done and out on DVD, fans are eager to know what will come next in J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek universe.

Roberto Orci spoke about Star Trek XII, including his take on the possibility of appearances by Khan and/or William Shatner.

For those with opinions on where Star Trek should go next, take heart, Orci admitted that he reads what is said by fans online and sometimes he takes their suggestions. “I read all the feedback, because I’m a fan and I frequented the sites as well, as a fan,” he said. “So I’m not going to stop now. You know? So absolutely. I mix it up and I read all the opinions and, you know, they must affect something. You can’t read stuff and not have it affect you somehow.”

Orci also spoke about the possibility of a role for Shatner in Star Trek XII. Shatner recently accepted a Scream Award for J.J. Abrams, leading to speculations that Shatner might be in the next Star Trek movie. “Well, we wrote a scene for him in the first one, and I got outvoted in terms of where it ended up,” said Orci. “I’ll write another one and we’ll see what happens.”

Talk about the sequel seems to inevitably come around to Khan. Orci would say definitively if Khan would appear or not. “…even if we do Khan, or not, we’re trying to approach the story as just what’s best for it, and then can that character become Khan or not, you know,” said Orci. “You’re not trying to rely on previous knowledge or love of it, so you almost want to strip all the names away and just come up with the emotional forces and the scientific forces that are going to come into play, and then start letting the details kind of bleed in.”

Internet rumor has come up with a possible actor to play the role of Khan. Nestor Carbonell, pictured below, who plays Richard Alpert on Abrams’s Lost, is the name being mentioned. Time will tell if Carbonell will have a role in Star Trek XII, or if it’s merely rumor. At this time, it’s not even certain that Khan will be in the sequel.

An important part of making Star Trek XI was convincing Leonard Nimoy to sign on for the movie.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci felt that it was important to have Nimoy on board to help make the transition from Star Trek to rebooted Star Trek. “We couldn’t have made the movie without Leonard,” said Kurtzman.

Kurtzman explained why they needed Nimoy. “We knew early on that so much of what was going to be required in re-imagining Star Trek and also in staying true to everything that came before it, was going to hinge on Leonard, in a way, blessing us moving forward. Also, in a way telling the audience that it’s okay. ‘You can make this transition now, I’m here to help you.’ We knew without him we were never going to be able to have a movie.”

“We didn’t agree to do the movie until we had the idea that we could get Leonard to be in the story,” said Orci. “That’s going to be a way to do both pleasing old fans, and having him the soul of Star Trek the plot reason for the changes. We knew that his blessing, it wasn’t until we hit upon that, that we said ‘Okay, now we might know how to do this.’ It was pivotal for us. We couldn’t have done it any other way.”

The writers were a bit nervous when it came to explaining what they had in mind for Spock. “Pitching the fate of Spock, to Spock, was a bit unnerving,” said Kurtzman. “It’s like ‘And then your planet blows up. Huh? You like that?’ said Orci.

But Nimoy, although not saying ‘yes’ right away, liked what he heard, and that was enough for Kurtzman and Orci to continue what they were doing. “He didn’t commit right away but he gave us the confidence to move forward knowing that he liked a lot of the direction that we were going in,” said Kurtzman. “I think that both creatively in hearts what we wanted the movie to be, and what the movie became could not have happened without his okay.”
