The Pioneers Of Television: Science Fiction

Several of the original series actors were profiled for the special, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols.


Rachel Nichols In Negotiations For Criminal Minds

Rachel Nichols, best-known to Star Trek fans as Gaila the Orion girl, is in negotiations to join the cast of CBS’ Criminal Minds as a series regular.

If Nichols does join Criminal Minds as a regular, she will be the first regular addition to the show since 2007, when Joe Mantegna (David Rossi) took over for Mandy Patinkin (Jason Gideon).


Nichols Answers More Fan Questions

Nichelle Nichols answered questions about her time on the original series, and gave her opinion on where the Abrams-verse Uhura should go.

One question that always comes up with original series members concerned getting along now with William Shatner. According to Nichols, “It’s very cordial when we see each other.”


Nichols On Spock-Uhura

Nichelle Nichols could see a romance between Uhura and Spock because the original series showed plenty of hints of something between the two characters.

Being young and new to Starfleet meant excitement and romance were part of the game, according to Nichols. “…she was a recruit and this was her first trip out. It was the five-mission where no man or woman had gone before. So J.J. [Abrams] had the right, as the director of the prequel, to show the characters as young people. NASA recruits train for a year, sometimes two, before they go out on their first mission. As young people, they’re excited and they’re new and they’re going to go on this mission, and there’s romance and so forth that’s going to go on.”


Hollywood Xpo Honors Nichols

Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhuru) will receive a Hollywood Legacy Award on Friday, October 15th at 7:00pm at Hollywood Xpo’s Stars Night Out in Universal City, California. Nichols’ Star Trek co-star Walter Koenig (Chekov) is emceeing the event, while Star Trek Generations actor Alan Ruck (Captain John Harriman) will be presenting Nichols with the award. The actress will be honored alongside astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who will receive his award from Star Trek: Voyager actor Tim Russ (Tuvok).


Rachel Nichols Cast On CBS Drama

Rachel Nichols, best known to Star Trek fans as Gaila the Orion Starfleet cadet who had a fling with James T. Kirk, has been cast on Criminal Minds.

Nichols will play FBI cadet Ashley Seager, who will appear in several episodes of the police drama.

Nichols Joins Conan

Rachel Nichols, Star Trek XI‘s Orion Gaila, will be joining Marcus Nispel‘s Conan.

Nichols, who played Scarlett in last year’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, joins fellow G.I. Joe actor Leo Howard, who played Young Snake Eyes. Howard has been cast as Young Conan.

Star Trek Season Two Blu-Ray Details

CBS and Paramount Home Entertainment have provided the full details for the Season Two original series DVD Blu-ray set.

As reported by CBS and Paramount Home Entertainment, the seven-disc set features all twenty-six episodes of the second season of the original series as well as one disc devoted to The Trouble With Tribbles.

Rachel Nichols Escapes Serious Injury

While filming G.I. Joe, Rachel Nichols (Gaila) was left with bruises and burned hair.

As reported by the Daily Star, the timing of a controlled blast on set didn’t work as planned and went off too early, injuring Nichols.

Star Trek Actor Castings And Happenings

Actors from several Star Trek series and movies have been cast in new roles or are appearing in shows, movies or at conventions.

As reported by JoBlo, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek XI‘s Uhura) has joined the cast of The Losers, where she will play the sole female “loser,” the cold-blooded killer Aisha. The Losers is about a Special Forces team, who have been set up and betrayed by their handler Max, and are out for revenge and to get their names off of a CIA death list. The Losers is based on the DC/Vertigo comic series which ran from 2003-2006.


Saldana On Preparing To Play Uhura

For Zoe Saldana, J.J. Abram’s interest in working with her was “all she needed,” to attract her to Star Trek XI

As reported by, Abram’s interest in working with Saldana and liking her work was enough for her to agree to meet with him. “For an actor, that’s all you need,” she said. “That’s all you want. To get the acknowledgement and respect from your peers; and so I went out and met him. He then said, ‘I don’t need to see you anymore’ and I felt really good. I felt like I did it.
