As reported by the New Zealand Herald, the appeal of Star Trek was the conflict between three strong personalities. “In my opinion Star Trek was always a cult of personality before science fiction,” said Urban. “You wanted to see the conflict between the characters, the grouchy, irascible Dr. McCoy argue with the rational, logical Spock, and see the hero, James T. Kirk make a decision and then go and bone the green girl. To me, that’s what was most intriguing about it, the fact it was a character-driven show with such strong personalities.”Happily for Urban, Star Trek XI will continue this winning formula. “Reading the script for this reboot I was thrilled to see they had held on to that,” he said.”

Urban plays Dr. McCoy, who often gives the impression of being grouchy, but the surliness is just a front for the real McCoy beneath the crusty exterior. “This character is irascible and cantankerous, and often downright grumpy but beneath that is one of the most altruistic, caring, loyal friends you can possibly have,” explained Urban. “The remarkable thing about him is he does not care who you are, he will speak his mind. His moral perspective, regardless of who he is arguing against, is always sound. It doesn’t matter that he’s more Jim Kirk’s friend than Spock’s, he will always give you the straight up, honest ground.”

Two short Star Trek XI video clips have appeared online; one featuring Kirk and Uhura and the other Dr. McCoy.

As reported by MTV and Yahoo, the first clip offers insight into how Kirk got into a barfight. The second video clip features an angry Dr. McCoy, who meets James T. Kirk for the first time. (Mild spoilers follow.)
In the first video clip, Kirk’s obnoxious manner towards Uhura is nothing she can’t handle. “I’m impressed,” she tells him after he correctly identifies her area of expertise. “For a moment there, I thought you were just a dumb hick, who only has sex with farm animal.” “Well,” replies Kirk. “Not only.”

But not so impressed were friends of hers, who try to warn him off, but the brash Kirk is more than ready, or so he thinks, to take on any who wish to brawl with him.

The second video clip features a Dr. McCoy who is reluctant to settle down and take his seat on a shuttle. He finally complies, but lets Kirk, seated next to him, hear all about it.

A view of Starfleet Academy in San Francisco and a scene with both Spocks are amongst the images of Star Trek XI trading cards that were recently posted online.

As reported by MTV Movies Blog, nine images of Star Trek XI cards were posted, which include character, ship and location scenes, including some shots not seen before. The card pictured here shows Starfleet Academy in San Francisco with futuristic buildings in the background and various personnel going about their business.

Another card shows Zachary Quinto as Spock facing Leonard Nimoy as older Spock. In this scene set in a hangar, young Spock is either greeting or sending off older Spock with the split-fingered Vulcan “Live long and prosper” greeting. Quinto is on another card as Spock.

Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy is shown in what appears to be a scene on the Bridge.

Star Trek aliens appear, including a sultry Orion female lounging on a bed in lingerie, Nero, and an unidentified alien. Nero’s oddly-shaped Romulan ship, traveling through a blue sky, is seen on a card.

Nero’s ship isn’t the only ship seen. One card pictures the USS Enterprise set against the black void of space either attacking something or under attack itself .

Co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had a job ahead of them when it came to including the necessary “signature bits” to make Star Trek XI feel like Star Trek.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, it took careful thought to include important character references yet keep Star Trek XI from seeming contrived by doing so. “The key is to introduce those things in a very organic way, so that the audience doesn’t feel like, ‘Oh, this is the scene where they design it around [that bit],” explained Kurtzman. “It’s more about creating a story so that all of those things that you are hoping you will see in the characters comes out.”According to Orci and Kurtzman, the list includes elements such as McCoy’s “I’m a doctor not a …,” “an engineer struggling against a law of physics,” Kirk cheating on the Kobayashi Maru, and McCoy and Spock needling each other.

Some things didn’t make the cut. “You know, in an early draft we wanted to potentially lay down the foundation for his friendship with Carol Marcus, who ends up in the original continuity being the mother of his child,” said Orci. “In an early draft she was in, and then literally because of the nature of the introductory story and making sure that our core group of characters had the proper amount of story that they deserve, she went into the potential future draft.”

William Shatner didn’t make the cut either. “Yeah, well, the biggest is [Shatner] in the movie,” said Kurtzman. “There’s been a lot of debate about that. We just, we really tried very hard to get him in there in a way that felt organic, but the problem was that because he died in continuity, …I think it would have felt a little bit cheap, is what we all decided. And, you know, we really struggled with it, because we wrote a scene that we really loved, and, ultimately, I think it might have felt like an add-on, you know?”

Chris Pine’s portrayal of Kirk will combine the old and the new, with the character maturing over the course of Star Trek XI.

As reported by CNN, fans needn’t worry that Pine’s version of Kirk will be too different for them to accept. “I think that with this Jim Kirk you’ll get the flavor of the old,” said Pine. “I tried to bring my own take to it and do justice to what Mr. Shatner did before, but you get to see the full spectrum of Jim Kirk. There’s the young, bold, brash, cocky [quality] and I think there’s a maturity that happens within the arc of the character in the movie that’s really fun that I think people will respond to.”
Pine also spoke about Karl Urban’s portrayal of Leonard McCoy, assuring fans that Urban was up to the task of playing the sometimes cranky doctor. “Urban is, oh, he’s fantastic,” said Pine. “I think when people see what Karl did with the role they’re going to be blown away. I mean, it was a shock when I found out that he was doing it; he’s such a great-looking guy. He’s such a leading man and to take on this classic character role…he is like the doppleganger of DeForest Kelley. But he brings his own Karl sensibility to it so people will really enjoy it.”
