Weller: Marcus’ Motivations

According to Peter Weller, Star Trek into Darkness‘ Admiral Marcus is not dissimilar from a relatively unknown historical figure from the early 1960s.

Like that historical figure, the admiral wanted to strike first and take the advantage that doing so would bring.


Weller: Landing His Trek Role

For Peter Weller, Star Trek into Darkness‘ Admiral Marcus, landing the role came courtesy of a Fringe episode containing an incident eerily reminiscent of a real life event in Weller’s life, and courtesy of a parking lot encounter with J.J. Abrams.

The episode of Fringe in which Weller had appeared (White Tulip) was a role that he had originally rejected, until his wife convinced him to read the script.

Even though Carol Marcus is a part of Star Trek history, actress Alice Eve has made the character her own.

Playing a younger version of the character means that Eve was free to make some changes to Marcus.

For Alice Eve, getting ready to play Dr. Carol Marcus meant doing a bit of research.

Eve knows the backstory of the character. “She’s dug, dug into there,” said Eve. “Dr. Marcus is a weapons specialist with a PhD. She’s incredibly intelligent and highly qualified. In the canon, she has Kirk’s baby. In Wrath of Khan, she is the mother of his grown son.”


Abrams: Klingons And Carol Marcus

In an interview with MTV, J.J. Abrams spoke about Klingons in Star Trek into Darkness, and about the role of Carol Marcus in the movie.

Even though long-time fans know all about Klingons,  Abrams explained that those new to the franchise coming to see Star Trek into Darkness didn’t “need to know any preexisting stories to watch this film.”


Star Trek XI Scenes Not Seen

Orci And Kurtzman: Fitting In What Fans Expect

Co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had a job ahead of them when it came to including the necessary “signature bits” to make Star Trek XI feel like Star Trek.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, it took careful thought to include important character references yet keep Star Trek XI from seeming contrived by doing so. “The key is to introduce those things in a very organic way, so that the audience doesn’t feel like, ‘Oh, this is the scene where they design it around [that bit],” explained Kurtzman. “It’s more about creating a story so that all of those things that you are hoping you will see in the characters comes out.” (more…)
