Star Trek XI Writers Explain Controversial Decisions

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci explained the reasoning behind Star Trek XI events that would be regarded as controversial by fans. (Spoilers)

As reported by MTV, one of the scenes provoking much discussion by fans is the destruction of Vulcan, one of the founding members of the Federation. “The scariest thing about [destroying Vulcan] was us having to pitch that to Leonard Nimoy,” explained Kurtzman. “‘Hi, I know we just met, but let me tell you about what happens to your home planet.’” (more…)

Pine And Quinto: Preparations Mental and Physical

Monday, May 11th, 2009

In addition to the mental demands of playing a character, there were also physical preparations for Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto to complete before they would be ready to step into their roles as Kirk and Spock.

As reported by The Cinema Source, Pine paid attention to the small details of Kirk, so that his portrayal of Kirk would be similar to that of William Shatner. “You watch the show, you know what Kirk does,” he said. “What resonated for me were certain physical things. There’s a way that he holds his body and moves about the deck of the ship that’s very, it’s almost theatrical, you see his kind of theatrical training in his gait and in the way he carries his body, in the way he sits in the chair.” (more…)

Pine and Quinto On Good Day, New York

As seen in a video by FOX New York, the reality of Kirk wasn’t quite what Chris Pine expected when he took on the role. “I signed up,” he explained. “I was very excited. I thought I was going to be the hero of the movie and get the lady and beat people up, and it was actually the exact opposite.

Zachary Quinto explained Spock’s appeal to audiences. “Spock has a definitive magnetism because there’s a mystery to him,” he said.

Pine On Stepping Into Kirk’s Boots

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

He may play a character that is cocky and self-assured, but Chris Pine was anything but confident at first when it came to accepting the role of Kirk.

As reported by Couriermail.com.au, Pine was initially anxious as to how Star Trek fans would view his take on Kirk. “I’m only human,” he said. “Star Trek brings with it a community of fans who are protective and avid and passionate and, you know, sifting through my resume to make sure that I’m good enough to take on their character.”

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, Faran Tahir‘s Captain Robau is no effete captain filing his nails in his quarters, but a tough and competent captain who is worthy of the seasoned Captain James T. Kirk of the original series.

Pine Almost Declined Kirk Role

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

It took a comment by Chris Pine‘s sister to get him to see that playing James T. Kirk would be better than accepting a role in White Jazz.

As reported by Variety, Pine was offered the roles for White Jazz and Star Trek XI at the same time, but he was leaning towards the former. “It was not a no-brainer,” said Pine. “This wild, sociopathic, obsessive-compulsive, latently homosexual, angry young man sounded like a blast. It was just a fun-fun-fun character role. Then I had Jim Kirk, more of the Harrison Ford versus the Gary Oldman role. My natural inclination is to do the character piece.”

Orci And Kurtzman: Fitting In What Fans Expect

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had a job ahead of them when it came to including the necessary “signature bits” to make Star Trek XI feel like Star Trek.

As reported by Sci Fi Wire, it took careful thought to include important character references yet keep Star Trek XI from seeming contrived by doing so. “The key is to introduce those things in a very organic way, so that the audience doesn’t feel like, ‘Oh, this is the scene where they design it around [that bit],” explained Kurtzman. “It’s more about creating a story so that all of those things that you are hoping you will see in the characters comes out.” (more…)
