Pine and Quinto On Good Day, New York
As seen in a video by FOX New York, the reality of Kirk wasn’t quite what Chris Pine expected when he took on the role. “I signed up,” he explained. “I was very excited. I thought I was going to be the hero of the movie and get the lady and beat people up, and it was actually the exact opposite.
Zachary Quinto explained Spock’s appeal to audiences. “Spock has a definitive magnetism because there’s a mystery to him,” he said.

He may play a character that is cocky and self-assured, but Chris Pine was anything but confident at first when it came to accepting the role of Kirk.
As reported by Couriermail.com.au, Pine was initially anxious as to how Star Trek fans would view his take on Kirk. “I’m only human,” he said. “Star Trek brings with it a community of fans who are protective and avid and passionate and, you know, sifting through my resume to make sure that I’m good enough to take on their character.”

Unlike some captains portrayed in various Star Trek episodes and movies, those of Star Trek XI compare favorably to the original series version of Captain Kirk.
As reported by Sci Fi Wire, Faran Tahir‘s Captain Robau is no effete captain filing his nails in his quarters, but a tough and competent captain who is worthy of the seasoned Captain James T. Kirk of the original series.

It took a comment by Chris Pine‘s sister to get him to see that playing James T. Kirk would be better than accepting a role in White Jazz.
As reported by Variety, Pine was offered the roles for White Jazz and Star Trek XI at the same time, but he was leaning towards the former. “It was not a no-brainer,” said Pine. “This wild, sociopathic, obsessive-compulsive, latently homosexual, angry young man sounded like a blast. It was just a fun-fun-fun character role. Then I had Jim Kirk, more of the Harrison Ford versus the Gary Oldman role. My natural inclination is to do the character piece.”

Co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had a job ahead of them when it came to including the necessary “signature bits” to make Star Trek XI feel like Star Trek.
As reported by Sci Fi Wire, it took careful thought to include important character references yet keep Star Trek XI from seeming contrived by doing so. “The key is to introduce those things in a very organic way, so that the audience doesn’t feel like, ‘Oh, this is the scene where they design it around [that bit],” explained Kurtzman. “It’s more about creating a story so that all of those things that you are hoping you will see in the characters comes out.” (more…)

Casting Zachary Quinto as Spock in Star Trek XI was an easy task, but finding a new Captain Kirk was more of a challenge.
As reported by Newsarama, to cast Kirk, it was first necessary to figure out who Kirk was as a character. “William Shatner has been in so many things we love so the question was ‘Who is Kirk?,” said Executive Producer Bryan Burk. “Who is this character he created? When you start talking about him, he’s someone who is strong willed, a little cocky, charming, and driven.” (more…)
