Writer Harlan Ellison set the record straight when he responded to articles reporting that he wouldn’t mind getting involved with J. J. Abrams‘ Star Trek.

Last month, Ellison told readers of his “Art Deco Dining Pavilion” that he wouldn’t mind working for Abrams. “I would jump at the chance to work with the inordinately-talented J.J. Abrams on a new Star Trek film,” he said.

Ellison contacted Sci Fi Wire recently, who had picked up on the story that TrekToday broke, to let them know that his statement was just idle musing and nothing should be read into what was said.

According to Sci Fi Wire, he also wanted to “kill our brash correspondent” who wrote the story.” Sci Fi Wire offered instead to set the story straight.

Hopefully, Ellison will never find out that it was the TrekToday reporter who was the first one to post a story based on his blog comments.

Writer Harlan Ellison thinks highly of J.J. Abrams and wouldn’t hesitate to get involved with the Star Trek XI sequel if he were contacted.

Paramount lawsuit or not, Ellison would answer the phone if Abrams called. “I would jump at the chance to work with the inordinately-talented J.J. Abrams on a new Star Trek film,” Abrams told his blog readers.

Ellison went on to explain what he would pitch, given the chance. “Yes, I would likely try to steer him toward the original film idea I was asked to pitch, by the late Gene Roddenberry and a production exec whose name I have blissfully flensed from memory (but he had been, if I recall, a hairdresser or clothing designer or ex-boyfriend of someone or other, and he kept trying to press me to include the Mayan Calendar).”

But it would be OK too if Abrams wasn’t keen on Ellison’s idea. “If the very smart Abrams didn’t want to go that way, I would be wide-open to rethinking such a film from the git-go,” said Ellison.

When it comes to Paramount though, Ellison would want things to be done properly from the start, like being paid for his valuable time. “Paramount would, of course, have to pay me from the first meet git-go; but I have absolutely no attitude that would prevent me from jumping in to work with such a clever fellah.”

Ellison went on to praise Abrams. “What the hell are you guys…nuts?,” he asked his readers, some of whom didn’t think Ellison would want to work with Abrams, Paramount or on Star Trek again. “Where’s the ‘downside’ to getting topside the radar of J.J. Abrams? This guy ain’t Roddenberry! He also ain’t the ex-hairdresser with the jones for Mayan calendars! He’s a writer I respect, whose work has frequently blown the lid off my box of surpriseability. But, then, he already KNOWS that. It isn’t as if I’d kept my admiration chained in the darkest cell of the basement of Bedlam.”

In case anyone doubted that Ellison was serious, he asked Abrams or those involved to feel free to get in touch with him. “If anyone out there thinks this melding has legs, let Abrams or anyone else with the chops to get in touch with me directly,” he said. “I am without full-time film-agent representation, by choice, at the moment; so if the job presents itself, I will work for pay.”

Harlan Ellison is satisfied with the settlement of his lawsuit against Paramount.

Ellison filed suit against Paramount and the Writers Guild of America in March, looking for an accounting and payment from merchandising, publishing and other exploitations of his famous teleplay, The City on the Edge of Forever.

The WGA was included because they failed to act on Ellison’s behalf after multiple requests. Ellison’s lawyer, John H. Carmichael, said at the time “Writers under that WGA agreement are supposed to get 25% of the revenue from the licensing of publication rights.”

The Crucible series (Crucible: McCoy-Provenance of Shadows, Crucible: Spock-The Fire, Crucible: Kirk-The Star to Every Wandering) of books used Ellison’s “unique story elements.” In addition to books, there was merchandise such as a Hallmark Christmas ornament of the “talking” Guardian of Forever which used actual lines that Ellison wrote for his teleplay.

Ellison posted on his website today, saying “The Star Trek lawsuit is over. I am pleased with the outcome. An ‘agreed-upon statement’ will be coming from me and my attorney John Carmichael and CBS/Paramount today or in the next two-three days. It is carefully worded. Wait for it. But, at bottom, three years’ litigation is completed. Lordy, I am tired. Smiling at last.”

Trektoday will post the statement when it becomes available.

Harlan Ellison, writer of the award-winning City on the Edge of Forever original series episode, filed suit against Paramount on March 13 for failing to account to, or pay Ellison for the merchandising, publishing or any other exploitations of his famous teleplay.

As reported by Harlanellison.com, the lawsuit also names the Writers Guild of America, alleging that the WGA failed to act on Ellison’s behalf after numerous requests.Ellison’s lawyer, John H. Carmichael said, “Writers under that WGA agreement are supposed to get 25% of the revenue from the licensing of publication rights.”

Paramount, through its sister-corporation Simon & Schuster, through its Pocket Books division, licensed the right to publish a trilogy of the episode (Crucible: McCoy: Provenance of Shadows, Crucible: Spock–The Fire and the Rose and Crucible: Kirk: The Star to Every Wandering, all by David R. George III,) using Ellison’s unique story elements. Paramount also licensed merchandise, such as the Guardian of Forever Hallmark Christmas ornament.

According to Carmichael, “Paramount will not respond to any alleged Guild requests for an accounting. Not just for the books, but for much City-related merchandise, such as a Hallmark Christmas ornament of the “talking” Guardian of Forever actually using lines Ellison wrote for his script, obvious re-uses of Ellison’s singular creation, for which he should be compensated.
