Darren Passed On Fontaine Multiple Times

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans have fond memories of episodes that included the hologram lounge singer Vic Fontaine, but actor/singer James Darren wasn’t impressed at first by the chance to play the popular character.

Like many actors, Darren wanted to do something that wasn’t too similar to what he was or what he did in real life. “They said I was going to be playing a singer and I said, “No, that’s too much on the nose. I want to pass.’ That’s what I told my agent,” said Darren.

Darren: I Gotta Do This

Friday, March 11th, 2011

When first approached to do Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, James Darren was lukewarm on the idea.

It took several attempts by Ira Behr to get Darren involved in the series. “I didn’t want to do it,” he said. “A singer on Star Trek? Are you crazy?”

Darren: From Shy School Kid To Singing Hologram

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Although the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine role of Vic Fontaine would let James Darren do what he loved most, sing and act, Darren was originally hesitant to take on the role.

Deep Space Nine Executive Producer Ira Steven Behr had seen Darren perform and wanted him for the 1960s Vegas holographic performer. “That was a real fluke,” said Darren. “I didn’t want to do it. I didn’t want to play the singer.”

Shatner Wanted For T.J. Hooker Film

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Although William Shatner didn’t get a cameo role in Star Trek XI, he may have better luck when it comes to the new T.J. Hooker film.

As reported by the New York Post, the producer of the just-announced movie hopes to get Shatner, as well as Heather Locklear (Stacy Sheridan,) James Darren (Corrigan,) Richard Herd (Dennis Sheridan) and Adrian Zmed (Romano) onboard for T. J. Hooker.

“We absolutely want to try and get the original cast in the movie,” explained Producer Ryan Heppe. “It’s all about finding the right story motivations to include their characters so we’re not just stopping the movie to drop by Adrian Zmed’s house, you know?”

T.J. Hooker, with Shatner playing the title role of a tough patrol sergeant, ran for five seasons on ABC and then CBS. The movie version of the popular cop show will deal with the relationship between T.J. Hooker and his father.
