IDW and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) have announced a Star Trek “Be a Redshirt” contest.

Usually, “being a redshirt” on the original series was apt to be hazardous, and while the same will hold true for the redshirt in this contest, there is a prize that makes it worth the inevitable phaser blast.

The grand prize in the “Be a Redshirt” contest will be a comic book cover appearance for the winner. The winner will be featured on an exclusive variant cover of an upcoming Star Trek comic in the newly-launched Star Trek (2009) universe, and “in true Redshirt fashion, will fall victim to a phaser blast in the midst of heroically saving [his or her comic book] retailer.”

“As redshirts are famous for always catching the phaser in Star Trek episodes, and as comic fans can be so loyal in defending their local retailer, it’s the perfect contest,” said Dirk Wood, IDW’s Director of Retailer Marketing. “And, partnering with the CBLDF is perfect because no one knows more about defending retailers than they do.”

The cover art featuring the winner will be done by the Sharp Brothers (Joe and Rob).

To enter the contest, which begins tomorrow, fans will have to do a bit of writing. Details can be found here.

A new contest on the Official Star Trek Facebook page offers a prize sure to be of interest to Trek fans, a U.S.S. Enterprise Artisan Replica ship.

Made by QMx and valued at $4,000, the ship is a replica of the one seen in Star Trek XI, and is “accurate in every way, from the subtle airbrushing to the special lighting effects to the detailed hull plating.”

According to QMx, “The Artisan Enterprise is entirely airbrushed by hand with some 24 colors of metallic and flat paint. A technique known as Aztecing overlaps color layers, multiplying the color effects and giving the finish an extraordinary degree of depth, while precisely matching the hull plating seen in the movie. An automotive base lacquer underneath it all – the same technique used to prepare filming miniatures for hours under hot studio lights – primes and protects the replica.

“The model itself was created using master components generated directly from CG files supplied to QMx by Industrial Light & Magic. The sculpture consists of thousands of details, many of which are only barely glimpsed on screen.”

The contest runs until December 27 and fans can enter by heading to the link located here. The contest is open to adult residents of the U.S., Canada (except for the province of Quebec), the UK and Germany.

STARFLEET, the world’s oldest and largest continuously-active Star Trek fan club, has announced that one of its guest judges for the second annual STARFLEET Short Story Contest is none other than Dorothy (D.C.) Fontana.

Authors will need to be members of STARFLEET to submit their Star Trek fan fiction, which should not exceed 7,500 words in length and which must take place within the fictional science fiction universe of Star Trek.

According to the press release from STARFLEET, “STARFLEET’s annual Short Story Contest affords aspiring writers an opportunity to have their work critiqued by an industry icon who is also a longstanding advocate of fan-written fiction. Fontana says that many excellent writers have gained professional recognition emerging from the ranks of fandom. “Study humanity and dream…” is her advice to up-and-coming authors. Fontana brings to bear her experience as a close associate of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, as well as her self-admitted critical analysis for character development and tight story structure.

“Dorothy Fontana has been a writer since the age of 21, and beyond her contributions to the Star Trek legacy, Fontana has written for such acclaimed television series as Babylon 5, Streets of San Francisco, Dallas, Bonanza, The Waltons, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Logan’s Run. Fontana’s experience and credits extend beyond writing to roles as an associate producer, story editor, novel and video game script author, and comic book contributor. Fontana’s experience also extends to development of such practical projects as an interactive medical education game, which aligns well with the orientation of the STARFLEET organization toward education and self-improvement. (STARFLEET offers a number of academic scholarships each year to active members enrolled in colleges and universities.)”

The deadline for submissions is June 1, at 12:00 Eastern Time. For contest guidelines, head to the link located here.

STARFLEET, The International Star Trek Fan Association, Inc. is “an organization of over 4,200 Star Trek and science fiction enthusiasts that have united the world of fandom in their appreciation of Star Trek, the greatest human adventure.
Last autumn, a lucky couple won a Star Trek-themed wedding at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, and now the same opportunity to win a wedding package is being offered to those on the West Coast.

According to a press release from The Tech, the Tech Museum is hosting a contest to select a lucky couple to get married, or to renew their vows, on the U.S.S. Enterprise bridge from the original series in Star Trek: The Exhibition.

Couples across the galaxy are eligible to win the ultimate wedding package, which includes exclusive use to the bridge during the ceremony; a private museum room for a reception; two-night’s stay at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, and a two-tier, Star Trek-themed wedding cake from Bijan Bakery & Café.

To enter, couples simply submit a photo along with a few short paragraphs on why they should be picked to say “I do” or renew their vows on the bridge. Deadline for entries is February 3rd, with the winning couple receiving the highest tally of worldwide votes cast on the Tech’s Facebook page from February 4th – 10th.

The winning couple will be announced just before Valentine’s Day, with the ceremony to take place in March or early April.

“We’ve seen many a Star Trek character fall in love and get married on the series,” said Peter Friess, president of The Tech Museum. “But how many couples actually have the chance to get married in real life, on one of the most iconic, science fiction set pieces ever? This will be a unique ceremony that they’ll remember forever. And it will surely be one of the most unusual events ever at the museum.”

For details on the package and how to enter, head to the Tech Museum of Innovation’s Facebook page, located here and click on the “Contests” tab.
