At the Comic-Con IDW panel, Tim Jones and Mike Johnson discussed their forthcoming comics such as Nero and the Star Trek XI adaptation comic as well as future comics including one based on a sequel to Star Trek XI and one set in the Star Trek: The Next Generation era.

As reported by TrekMovie.com, the Nero comics were meant to fill in the missing twenty-five years between Spock and Nero’s first encounter, and after they went back in time and met again. “…there is a huge story sitting right there in the middle of the movie that, obviously, they didn’t have a lot of time to go into on-screen with everything else going on,” explained Jones. “So we get to fill in a little bit of that in graphic form.” “And it isn’t just the Shawshank Redemption, or ‘Neroshank Redemption,” added Johnson. “He is in prison for part of the series, but how did he know where to be to meet Spock? A big part of the mini-series is about how he learns that.”

In addition to filling in that missing time, there are things included that fans will enjoy. “We have a sort of famous Klingon,” said Johnson. There are characters, things, entities from the Star Trek universe that are in the comic that were not seen in the movie, that actually tie into the story.”

Jones and Johnson then spoke about the Star Trek XI adaptation comic. “It is not going to be an exact duplication of the movie,” said Jones. “We will be able to hear some inner dialog from our characters, which you don’t get on screen.”

“We don’t want to just tell the scenes verbatim, because you can just watch them in the movie,” said Johnson. “So we would rather just use the comic form and take advantage of it. So show scenes that you know, but show them from a different perspective.”

As for future plans, “There has been discussion about doing a Countdown-ish project before a second movie,” said Johnson. He also revealed that the pair would like to do a Next Generation story. “We have had conversations with IDW, but to jump back and tell a story between Nemesis and Countdown, to show how Data came back and became captain of the Enterprise, and what happened to Picard and their relationship and other members of the crew,” he said. “We are huge Next Gen fans, so yeah there is another story to be told where Countdown left off.”

Ten Questions Answered by J.J. Abrams

Memory Alpha, has posted ten answers to questions submitted to J.J. Abrams by Star Trek fans.

Questions submitted included topics such as: original fan alienation concerns, Trek canon, the influence of Abrams’ other work on making Star Trek XI, directing Leonard Nimoy, redoing aspects of the movie, relating to characters from the original series, why the classic era time was chosen, designing the ship stations, using Memory Alpha as a reference and concerns that Star Trek is no longer as relevant as it was when the series first began.
First Look at Alien Spotlight: Romulans

On May 20, Star Trek: Alien Spotlight: Romulans from IDW Publishing will hit stores as reported by The Comics Continuum, where a five page preview of the issue is available, as well as a picture of the cover.

Star Trek: Alien Spotlight: Romulans will be thirty-two pages in length and will cost &_#36;3.99

Meyer on Writing and Moviemaking

As reported by The Daily Iowan, Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country,) spoke about how he got into writing. “I never dreamed of becoming a writer or making movies, because I didn’t know they were made,” he explained. “I thought they were dreams you could pay to see.”

A class in playwriting at the University of Iowa started him on the road to becoming a professional writer. “Iowa jump-started everything for me,” he said. “It was the blank slate I needed.”

Today’s fans have different taste in movies, according to Meyer. “Nobody wants to see movies about people,” he said. “The world is in such deep shit, we’d rather just see slasher flicks. Anything but more reality.”

Meyer has a memoir coming out in August that will be of interest to Star Trek fans, The View From the Bridge: Memories of Star Trek and a Life in Hollywood.

Star Trek XII Rumor

With the success of Star Trek XI, a sequel is probable and a rumor of a possible story element has been posted, courtesy of Movieweb.

According to Bruce Greenwood (Christopher Pike,) who spoke to Movieweb by telephone, Greenwood discussed the possible future of Captain Pike and has created a backstory for the character, which he said that J.J. Abrams hopes to use in Star Trek XII. This future, according to Greenwood, will not include a permanent presence in the wheelchair where fans last saw him.

Greenwood hinted that Pike’s personal story would be tied into Captain Robert April, the original Captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Treat this as a rumor, but an intriguing one nonetheless.

Wil Wheaton: Thumbs Up for Star Trek XI

Suicide Girls has posted Wil Wheaton’s thoughts concerning Star Trek XI.

“It was awesome. I loved it,” said Wheaton. He went on to explain why he loved Star Trek XI and part of the reason was J.J. Abrams. “J.J. Abrams may not be one of us in the convention-going sense, but I think he has something in common with us, and I think it’s a big reason why Star Trek made so many of us so very, very happy.”

Philly Star Trek: The Exhibition

Fox 29 has posted two short videos showing fans who plan to attend Star Trek: The Exhibition while it is at The Franklin in Philadelphia what they can expect to see, including uniforms and select items from Star Trek XI.

To see the preview, head here and here.

William Shatner has teamed with Bluewater Comics for a series of comic books based on several of his non-Star Trek novels.

As reported by Wizarduniverse.com, according to Shatner, it wasn’t difficult to move into the world of comics after writing novels. “I was asked if I was interested in doing comic books, and it occurred to me that I had three series of novels (Quest for Tomorrow, Man O’War, TekWar) that I had written, thinking visually all the time,” he explained. “I had adventure films in mind so that a person reading the book might visualize their own personal movie. And comics lend themselves to movie themes because the best comics have a singular theme as well. There’s a simplicity to the story, but simple stories can have a power, as we know from traditional storytelling. So my books and these comics fit well together.”The world of creating a comic was fascinating to the former Captain Kirk. “I’m intrigued by the artistry of the people who draw them, and what they are able to contain in a frame, which you really can’t do on film,” said Shatner. “A comic book artist has to tell the story with the right emphasis and yet as efficiently as possible, because you only have so many frames on a page. That’s really intriguing to me because the director of a film also has the same problem. But a comic artist has to get everyone in the frame, as well as the dialogue and have there be a kind of logic to it all. It’s complex and I find it fascinating.”

In addition to the previously-mentioned novels, Shatner is working on an original title for Bluewater. “At the moment the title is Chimera, but I don’t know how much I can tell you,” he said. “We’re planning on a release in August of this year. The writer is Andy Mangels, who’s a really terrific guy. It features an intriguing character and we’re working on the motivation of that character, which will inform us a great deal, so that’s what we’re thinking about at the moment.”
