Star Trek XI was followed in sales by UP, G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra, My Sister’s Keeper and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Top rentals for the week ending November 22 include: Star Trek XI in the first position, followed by My Sister’s Keeper, The Ugly Truth, The Taking of Pelham 123 and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

In the clip, Nero is threatened with the use of a Centaurian slug (in Star Trek XI, he threatens Captain Pike with one of the slugs,) but no one can keep a bad Romulan down for long.

The bonus clip isn’t the only treat for Star Trek fans. Another clip on the site features William Shatner on stage during the Scream Awards teasing J.J. Abrams about Shatner not being in Star Trek XI. Just prior to the events in the clip, Shatner had gone onstage to accept The Ultimate Scream award (“best in show”) for Star Trek XI.

Abrams’ remarks are now available in a six-part video series posted online, where he talks about everything from pre-production, to deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes work on Star Trek XI.

Regarding a controversial scene, where Kirk and Spock meet up in the ice cave,  Abrams explains how this meet-up makes sense after all. “There are elements in the special features and deleted scenes that address the storylines, the logic of it,” said Abrams. “For example, one of the things that people had issues with was ‘Oh COME on. Kirk is going to run into an ice cave and he’s going to run into Spock like that? That is the dumbest thing ever and…unlikely.’ But, there in the scene, they’re in the cave and there was a sequence that was cut from the movie where Spock speaks to that and he talks about how this is sort of the timeline’s way of trying to repair itself and it’s as much about fate as anything.”

“Alex and Bob…made it [the film] about inevitability,” said Abrams. “They made it about how Kirk and Spock…the movie is about this family that nothing will keep apart and it’s about that kind of friendship that will endure anything. So there was a kind of genius in taking the most unlikely moment, a coincidence that I would never in a million years buy and hang a huge lantern on it and say that is fate. And you just kind of go ‘fine.’ …it really didn’t need to be explained away.”

At the press release, the navigation features for disc 2 of the Star Trek XI Blu-ray release, which has more features than the non-Blu-ray DVD set, were shown to those in attendance.

There is a menu, aqua-colored with white lettering, and a diagram of the USS Enterprise, in blue, is in the background. The menu itself has an easy-to-use expanding tree style format.

The featurettes, all done in HD, are the same on both the Blu-ray and DVD sets. The Blu-ray offers “branching pods” which can be accessed while watching the feature or from the main menu, which leads to additional content such as extra video.

Deleted scenes on both sets can be viewed either with or without audio commentary from J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof. Deleted scenes include: Spock’s Birth, Klingons Take Over Narada, Young Kirk, Johnny and Uncle Frank, Amanda and Sarek Argue After Spock Fights, Prison Interrogation and Breakout, Sarek Gets Amanda, Dorm Room and Kobayashi Maru, Kirk Apologizes to the Green Girl and Sarek Sees Spock.

Fans can pre-order the Star Trek DVD and Blu-ray sets, which are due out on November 17.

Five new screenshots featuring battle scenes such as a Borg cube exploding into pieces as well as a customized ship of the Constitution Class.

In addition to announcing the new screenshots, Star Trek: Online urges readers to submit new questions for Ask Cryptic where another batch of “Player Progression” questions will be asked. “We’d like to hear any remaining questions you have about player progression, before we move on to other areas of discussion,” says the announcement. “Be sure to check out the last Ask Cryptic primer on player progression, as well as the previous set of Ask Cryptic answers for background info. Then, just ask any remaining questions you have in this post’s comment thread. We’ll select a few to put to the devs.”

Finally, according to Wired, those Star Trek: Online fans who intend to purchase the original series third season Blu-ray DVD set, there is a limited number of DVD sets that will include a special code that unlocks a special outfit, which is said to be an exclusive admiral’s outfit.

Fans who purchase the original series second season Blu-ray set will have some sleuthing to do, and a knowledge of Star Trek trivia will help when it comes to finding seven of the Easter Eggs.

Each disc has two Easter Eggs. One of the two Easter Eggs will be found in the usual way, searching the menu, but fans will have to put on their thinking caps for the second Easter Egg on each disk. The second Easter Egg will be found by using one’s remote control to input a four-digit “access code”. The following clues will help figure out which four-digit number to use:

• Disc 1 – The real life year in which Star Trek first aired on TV.
• Disc 2 – The first year of the historic five-year mission of the USS Enterprise.
• Disc 3 – Birth year of Spock.
• Disc 4 – The original air date of The Trouble With Tribbles.
• Disc 5 – Number found on the hull of the Enterprise.
• Disc 6 – The year Shakespeare died as given in By Any Other Name.
• Disc 7 – The year to which the crew time-travels in Assignment:Earth.

The bonus special in question was titled “Where No Fan Has Gone Before,” and speculation was that this was the original Star Trek pilot The Cage.

The title should have given the clue, as it was a play on Where No Man Has Gone Before, the name of the second Star Trek pilot episode.

“It is the original cut of Where No Man Has Gone Before, the second pilot episode,” explained Okuda. “The reassembled original cut of The Cage is also supposed to be included.”

The original cut of Where No Man Has Gone Before is supposed to be “structured differently and has some different camera angles here and there,” according to TV Shows On DVD reader Michael Rosenberg.

The Blu-ray DVD set will be released on December 15.

Holiday shopping might be easier for some this year with the news that the third season of the original series will be released on Blu-ray disc on December 15.

The episodes will be available in both “as aired” and “remastered” versions. Subtitles are available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. The video is high-def 1080p resolution, but formatted to 1:33:1 full screen as originally aired. The run time is listed as 1350 minutes (over twenty-two hours.)

As always, there are plenty of extras with the set. Fans of The Cage will be interested in “Where No Fan Has Gone Before, the Restored, Unaired Alternate Pilot Episode.” In addition to that, the list includes:

As reported by The Digital Bits, two more Star Trek DVD sets will be released on May 12th. The sets are from the original series and from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The first set, The Best of Star Trek: The Original Series will include: The City on the Edge of Forever, The Trouble with Tribbles, Balance of Terror and Amok Time. These episodes will be the remastered versions.
The second set, The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation, will include: The Best of Both Worlds Part I and II, Yesterday’s Enterprise and The Measure of a Man.

In addition to the already announced seasons and films, the rumor is that the rest of The Next Generation films (Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis) will be released on Blu-Ray in time for the holidays. The films will be packaged as a four-film The Next Generation box set, and there is a possibility of an eleven-film Blu-Ray set of all eleven of the Star Trek movies, both from the original series and The Next Generation.

As reported by TrekMovie.com, CBS and Paramount have made the official announcement that the original series and the original series-era of movies will be released beginning on April 28th. The first Blu-Ray release will be the first season of the original series.Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and the other five original series movies (Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek: The Search for Spock, Star Trek: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country) will be released on May 12th.

The first season original series set will include “Starfleet Access” in six episodes, which includes special pop-up trivia and picture-in-picture video commentaries. An interactive tour of the Enterprise is also featured, along with Billy Blackburn’s rare on-set home movie footage, a featurette on the Remastered project and more.

The six-film Star Trek collection includes a brand-new commentary track from noted experts and Star Trek fans as well as commentaries from the previous release of the films. The set has over fourteen hours of special features, of which two-and-a-half hours of that is new material.

A Blu-Ray DVD set including the three “Genesis” movies (Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek: The Voyage Home) will also be available for sale beginning May 12th.
