In the first part of a two-part interview, Rick Berman answered several questions regarding his involvement with Star Trek.

Question topics include Ron Jones, hypercritical Star Trek fans, Enterprise and its finale, Star Trek versus Babylon 5, DVD/Blu-ray commentaries and having Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise airing on UPN rather than on a higher-rated network.

Berman: TNG Movie Hits And Misses

In looking back at the four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies, Rick Berman sees where things went right and where mistakes were made, but the response to Star Trek: Nemesis baffles him.

In Star Trek: Generations; Berman, Brannon Braga and Ron Moore made the jump from a television series to a movie, but angered both Leonard Nimoy and original series fans.

Berman: Too Much Trek

If Rick Berman had had his way, new Star Trek television series would have been spaced out a little better and not put right on top of each other, and Berman would not have done the Star Trek: Enterprise finale that angered many viewers.

Once Star Trek: The Next Generation ended, the network wanted more Trek, even though Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was still on air. “We asked them to wait a couple of years,” said Berman. “They said, ‘We have all these time slots available. We don’t want to lose them.’ They felt very strongly about a new series.”

Braga: Darker Enterprise And Different Voyager Finale

Brannon Braga and Rick Berman had a different Star Trek: Enterprise in mind than what actually ended up airing, plus Braga says that if he could redo the Star Trek: Voyager finale, he would make a surprising change.

Had Berman and Braga had their way, fans would have seen some Earth-bound shows for Enterprise, especially in the beginning. “Rick Berman and I had a little bit more of a raw conception of Enterprise than maybe the studio was comfortable with,” explained Braga. “It was actually set on Earth for a while – the building of the first starship, kind of like J.J.’s. We wanted to do the launch of the first starship and take it maybe a little bit more retro, and we initially didn’t have the futuristic temporal cold war aspect of it.”
