According to Zachary Quinto, there is a “goldmine of drama” to be explored in Star Trek 2.
Quinto is happy that there is a bit of delay in making that sequel though. “It makes people miss it a little bit,” he said, “you know what I mean? We had a lot of goodwill around that first movie. So I feel like people are going to be ready for a second one by the time it comes out. It’s not like ‘Already? Really? Again?”
Star Trek 2 could “go anywhere,” says Quinto, and Vulcan’s fate as laid out in Star Trek XI is not necessarily set in stone. “I imagine we’re going to pick up right where we left off, but it could be a completely different timeline,” he said. “They’ve basically now created a device that allows them to go anywhere with it. I mean, we could be in a parallel universe; we could be in a parallel time. That’s the joy of science-fiction. Vulcan could be back.”

Zoë Saldana has a few things that she would like to see in Star Trek 2.
If Saldana had her way, fans would see more of the Spock-Uhura romance. “For some reason, I’m not like a mushy person, but I kind of want Spock and Uhura to get it on,” she said. “Not in that sense, but you really want to see more of that love affair.”
Another thing Saldana would enjoy is seeing a bit more of Captain Kirk. “Captain Kirk should definitely take off his shirt,” she said. “Along with Sulu.”
And what about her own character? “And I think Uhura should kick some ass,” said Saldana.

Back in May, TrekToday reported that Roberto Orci was interested in helping to create a new animated Star Trek series, and this weekend, word comes that both he and Star Trek XI Co-writer/producer Alex Kurtzman are serious about doing so.
Appearing on the My Geek Time radio show, the two revealed that they are seriously investigating the possibility of making the animated Star Trek. “We have asked about [an animated Star Trek series],” said Orci. “We have asked what the rights are and who owns it and what are the possibilities. It is a very early – kind of ‘is this a possibility?’ and we are waiting to hear back. But we would love to do it.”
“We just had the experience of doing Transformers: Prime on The Hub,” said Kurtzman. “We learned a lot from that experience and it would be cool to do something like that from Trek.”

Although he hadn’t really given thought to the issue, J.J. Abrams is open to the idea of a gay character in Star Trek 2.
Star Trek has always been considered to be progressive and groundbreaking, but there has never been an identifiable gay character, although there were stories which dealt with homosexuality in an oblique way.

Star Trek XI‘s Zachary Quinto speculates on the future of Spock in Star Trek 2.
With the destruction of Vulcan in Star Trek XI, there will be pressure on Spock to help his race. “I would imagine (this is just speculative),” said Quinto, “his planet’s been destroyed, he feels a real imperative to rebuild his race. But he’s in love with a human. There’s probably some potential conflict in that dynamic, I would not be surprised, and I would be intrigued and excited by that if that were the case.”
