Earlier in the year we moved to a new content management system (CMS). It was a learning experience, and some things didn’t go well. So we’re pleased to announce that today we have moved to another new system — and this one is here to stay!

You won’t find it’s changed a lot at first glance, but it works better and allows us to expand and enhance the site in the future.

In particular you can find content by:

Using the search box on the right hand side of the page.

Browsing by tags, further down on the right hand side.

Or browsing by category or date on the left hand side.

We’re also pleased to report that our Twitter news updates are now working. You can subscribe to Twitter updates, or our Facebook group, via the links on the left.

We have some rough edges to iron out, but we hope you enjoy the site. Please let us know if you encounter any problems at newcms@trektoday.com.

We’re pleased to announce that TrekToday is now running on a brand new content management system (CMS) which will bring lots of new features to the site.

There’s still quite a bit of work to do, and some functionality isn’t up and running yet, so we’re classing the current phase as the beta period of our new site. What’s a beta? In short that means things won’t work quite right, so please forgive us, but we’ll get there soon.
One of the biggest changes you’ll see is that there are now many ways to find the news you want:

Firstly you can browse by category or by date by clicking a link on the left hand side.

News items are also tagged. You can click a tag within a news item, or in the Tag Cloud on the right hand side, and find similar news. For example if you want to see all news relating to William Shatner you can just click Shatner.

Finally there’s also now a search engine, in the top right hand corner of the page.

We have only got February 2009’s news in the new system at the moment, which means content is currently a bit sparse. The system will build over time, and we hope to import the old news into the system at a later date. For now all news is the old system still accessible here.

Coming later are many improvements. The biggest change is that soon you will be able to leave comments for any news item. Rather than having a separate discussionn area for each news item at the Trek BBS, comments will be part of the article. You’ll be able to login with your Trek BBS membership, or other logins such as Facebook.

We’ll also be improving the RSS feed, as well as offering ways to share and manage the news you enjoy with social networking and news websites.

For now, please bear with us as we start to populate the new system with news and get the features up and running. There are many rough edges right now which we’ll also be improving, so excuse any glitches.

For now, if you spot anything really broken or have any other feedback, please drop us a line at newcms@trektoday.com.
