Boldly Heading Into The Afterlife

Kurtzman And Orci Split From DreamWorks

Star Trek XI‘s Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in negotiations to move their K.O. Paper Products company.

Kurtzman and Orci’s deal with DreamWorks is due to expire at the end of the year, and the split from DreamWorks is “said to be a friendly one.”

Netflix To Arrive In The UK

Netflix will expand its services to the UK and Ireland next year.

Netflix had begun to expand its streaming service, first to Canada in 2010, and then to forty-three countries in Latin America and the Caribbean in September of this year.

Roddenberry Center for Stem Cell Biology Created

The Roddenberry Center for Stem Cell Biology and Medicine at Gladstone has been created to honor the legacy of Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry.

The Roddenberry Foundation, co-founded by Rod Roddenberry, donated five million dollars to establish the Center, which will “build on Gladstone’s existing expertise in stem cell science, helping to speed the process by which discoveries are turned into therapies for a host of devastating illnesses.”

New York Comic-Con Trek Licensees

For fans attending the New York Comic-Con, which begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday at the Javits Center in Manhattan, there were be plenty of Star Trek licensees in attendance showing off their products, plus several guests affiliated with the franchise.

The products to be shown include books, action figures, Bluetooth headsets, ornaments and busts.

A New Generation of Reading Rainbow To Debut

Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s LeVar Burton has announced the launch of “RRKidz, a breakthrough reading, discovery and exploration platform that motivates today’s kids to experience literature via the digital devices they love.”

Burton was the producer and the host of PBS’s award-winning Reading Rainbow, which ran from 1983 until 2006.

Vintage Original Series Sell Sheet

A booklet promoting the original series was sent out ahead of the 1966-1967 television series to interest advertisers in the show in hopes of getting them to purchase commercial time, and a copy of this Star Trek NBC sales pilot sell sheet has recently made its appearance on the Internet.

The booklet features a cover with James T. Kirk as Captain of the USS Enterprise, with Yeoman Smith (Andrea Dromm) at his side.

Hulu To Offer Trek In Japan

Star Trek fans in Japan will be able to see Star Trek via Hulu’s subscription-only service.

CBS Corporation and Hulu announced the multi-year, non-exclusive licensing agreement that will offer certain television shows from across CBS Corporation to be streamed instantly.

Roddenberry Company To Produce 360 Film

Rod Roddenberry‘s Roddenberry Entertainment will join Social Animal to produce a “first-of-it’s-kind 360°” film project called White Room: 02B3.

According to a press release, “White Room: 02B3 will transport the audience into 360 degrees of intensity as six strangers find themselves unwillfully participating in an experiment that could change the face of humanity. Roddenberry Entertainment’s Tory Mell penned the project upon executives recognizing the opportunity that the unique 360° video camera provides. The system consists of nine 2K cameras shooting off mirrors to capture a high quality panoramic video with no gaps or distortion.”

Quinto Production Company To Produce Horror Film

Zachary Quinto‘s production company, Before the Door Pictures, will take part in producing The Banshee Chapter.

Before the Door Pictures will join Sunchaser Entertainment and Christian Arnold-Beutal in producing The Banshee Chapter, which will begin shooting later this month.

King Abdullah II Investing In Park With Trek-themed Ride

A Star Trek-themed attraction will be part of the 74-hectare Red Sea Astrarium project, which will begin development next year.

And a familiar name will be part of the investment group funding the attraction, King Abdullah II of Jordan.

Netflix Trek For Latin America And Perhaps Canada

CBS Corporation and Netflix, Inc. have announced a two-year, non-exclusive international licensing agreement that will be of interest to Canadian and Latin American Star Trek fans.

In the agreement, certain television shows, including the original series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, will be available for streaming via Netflix to customers in Latin America later this year. It is not yet known if the other Star Trek televised series will be included.

Netflix Streaming Trek

Fans who wish to watch the various Star Trek series online can now do so for a nominal monthly fee, courtesy of Netflix.

Four of the five televised series are currently available. The only series not yet available, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, will be added in October.

Shatner Nominated For TCA Award

William Shatner was one of six people nominated in one category for a 2011 Television Critics Association (TCA) award.

The 2011 TCA Awards “recognize outstanding television programming in the 2010-2011 season, honoring both actors and producers in a variety of categories including news and information, youth, drama and comedy achievements.” (more…)

Hallmark Returns to Comic-Con 2011

Hallmark will be at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, which runs from July 20-24.

“We are excited to participate in Comic-Con for the fourth year,” said Beth Dorr, associate merchandise manager for Keepsake Ornaments. “The convention gives us a great opportunity to meet and interact with some of our most passionate fans and reward them with exclusive opportunities and sneak peeks.”
