Michael A. Martin‘s Star Trek geekiness led to a partnership that resulted in writing for Trek comics and then for Trek novels, finally leading to his own solo Trek writing career.

A phone call from Andy Mangels got the ball rolling for Martin. “[He] told me that Marvel had just picked up the Star Trek comics license,” said Martin. “He wanted to pitch to Marvel, but felt that his ‘Trekspertise’ might not be up to the challenge, since he was more of a Star Wars authority. So he asked me if I, a notorious Star Trek geek, wanted to collaborate with him.”

Martin said yes. “…we began pitching together to Marvel, selling two stories out of our first three tries, right off the bat,” he said. “Our first sale got approved in less than a day, which we were told had never happened before. The next thing we knew, we were the regular writing team on Marvel’s Deep Space Nine series, and wrote a couple of other special Trek projects for them as well—including a TNG sequel to A Piece of the Action for the tenth and final issue of Star Trek Unlimited.”

When Martin found out that someone he knew from DC Comics had moved to Simon and Schuster, he acted. “I discovered that my old sales counterpart at DC Comics, one Marco Palmieri, had moved on to become a senior editor at Simon and Schuster’s Pocket Books imprint. Since he was in charge of a big chunk of the company’s line of Star Trek novels, and because he was interested in bringing new talent into his stable of authors, Andy and I got to start pitching to him. One of those early pitches became our 2001 TNG novel, Section 31: Rogue, our very first novel.”

After writing a dozen novels and short stories with Mangels, Martin started writing Trek books on his own, “I look back on those years with a lot of fondness,” he said. “I think Andy and I did a lot of great work together, both in comics and in prose. We had a long and fruitful partnership. But we were both growing as individual creators all the while, and each of us always had our own individual irons in our own respective fires. At some point, you outgrow whatever framework you might have established eight or ten years earlier.”

Martin is currently working on a USS Titan novel, Fallen Gods, which will be released next autumn.

Author Michael A. Martin‘s new Star Trek Enterprise book: To Brave the Storm, is the second and concluding novel in the Romulan War series.

In To Brave the Storm, “Things are looking pretty grim,” said Martin. “Earth is in the worst shape it’s been in since the war began.”

“Because of T’Pau’s commitment to Syrrannite pacifism, Vulcan is still sitting out the conflict,” said Martin. “The rest of the Coalition has essentially crumbled because Vulcan’s pullout has spooked Andoria and Tellar. Starfleet has fallen back, making the Sol system’s defense its number-one priority. Jonathan Archer is forced to seek help elsewhere, hat in hand, and isn’t having much luck despite his concerted effort to rehabilitate Enterprise’s reputation, which the Kobayashi Maru disaster has tarnished pretty badly. Meanwhile, the Romulans are wrapping up a distracting conflict out on the Empire’s far Beta-quadrant frontier, and this allows them to mobilize more ships than ever before against a resource-starved Earth and her ever-dwindling list of friends, allies, and colonies. Did I mention that things are looking pretty grim?”

In To Brave the Storm, Martin has put his characters through the wringer. “I like putting characters into situations that test them severely,” he said. “It’s the only way to show what they’re really made of. Since Archer was the inadvertent author of what would one day become Starfleet’s Kobayashi Maru test, I wanted him to start thinking that the war might be turning into a no-win scenario for Earth. And I hoped he would find the inner strength to face death with some dignity and grace, ready to die with his boots on, as it were.

Archer wasn’t the only character undergoing trials and tribulations. “It was also important to me to give Hoshi Sato some stage time, showing how the war had matured her,” said Martin. “I needed to provide some closure to Travis Mayweather’s relationship with Archer, showing him coming full circle in working out the resentment he has felt toward the captain ever since the Kobayashi Maru incident. And most importantly, I wanted to bring a resolution to Trip’s fate, as well as to his relationship with T’Pol. Enough said on that for now, I think.”

Star Trek Enterprise: The Romulan War: To Brave the Storm was released today.

Writer and Star Trek fan Chris Roberson had the enjoyable task of writing a comic that had the crew of the original series interacting with the characters from the Legion of Super Heroes.

Roberson believes that the idea for the crossover was inspired. “If the concept of the Enterprise crew meeting the Legion of Super Heroes doesn’t appeal to you, there may be something wrong with you,” he said.

Contacted “out of the blue” by IDW Publishing, Roberson took no time in saying “Yes,” to the project. “I didn’t hesitate for a second before accepting,” he said. “But the project was so much in my wheelhouse, as a lifelong fanatic for both franchises, that I suspected for weeks that someone was playing a prank on me.”

It was no prank though, and Roberson got down to work. “I really started doing the research for this project when I was eight years old, so I didn’t really need to do much more,” he said. “But it was a great excuse to sit down and watch a bunch of original series Star Trek episodes and reread a huge stack of old LSH comics!”

Roberson explained what he liked about Star Trek and the Legion of Super Heroes. “I think what I found appealing about both Star Trek and the Legion was that they were immersive, well-realized future worlds with lots of depth (backstory and history) and breadth (expansive setting),” he said. “Optimistic, almost utopian futures in which humanity has gone out into the stars, made friends with alien races, and formed a democratic union of planets which is defended by an organization composed of representatives from all of the member worlds.”

The Star Trek/Legion of Super Heroes story takes place “during the tail end of the five-year mission, sometime not long after the end of the original series,” said Roberson. “So that all of the televised adventures we’ve seen have already happened, but the characters are still in much the same forms. (Scotty hasn’t grown his mustache yet, for example.)”

Fans of Trek and the Legion should be alert while reading, says Roberson, as there will be Easter eggs hidden throughout the comics.
