Williams In Liaisons: Wanting Picard’s Love

1 min read

Star Trek: The Next Generation guest star Barbara Williams shares her experiences of working on the Liaisons episode.

In Liaisons, Williams played an Iyaaran ambassador Voval/Anna, who is studying the emotion of love with Picard as an unwilling subject.

Williams enjoyed working with Sir Patrick Stewart, who was “lovely.” The two “both had stage backgrounds” in common, and “and there was a Shakespearean quality to the episode. So, we indulged our theater chops to the max,” said Williams.

The role was a good one for Williams. “Anna/Voval did everything she could, with her limited understanding of human intimacy, to win Captain Picard’s affection,” said Williams. “She stages an accident. She disables him with a device. She nurses and coddles him, but he doesn’t respond to her in the way she thinks he should. Finally, she throws him to the ground, quite forcefully, and says ‘Why don’t you love me?’ That was so much fun. We did it several times because we kept breaking up.”

Williams liked the character so well, that she wishes that “they would have made my character permanent. I loved representing human femininity.”

Williams is currently penning a memoir, The Hope in Leaving.
