  1. “Detonated the Fleet and everything it stands for”?! If by “detonated” they mean “blew up”, then how do you blow up a set of values? And didn’t they just destroy the fleet in the last movie (and a couple or three movies back)? Guess rebuilding the fleet’s kind of an annual thing when you’re the Federation.

  2. If this synopsis is genuine, then things are looking dark indeed for the franchise and the “unstoppable force of terror from within” has the initials JJA.
Damn, I do hope this is a hoax.

  3. Either Spock or McCoy will be captured/sacrificed at the end of the movies only to be rescued in the third.

  4. I didn’t think is was possible, but this sounds worse then his first movie!!! Don’t get me wrong, I love JJ’s other stuff. I LOVE Fringe, but he really doesn’t understand Trek.

  5. It obviously is. Whoever wrote that press release has only a very basic set of writing skills. There’s no way someone who writes releases that poorly would still have a job.

  6. In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization. One that has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

Detonated? Maybe devastated or disrupted were the words the press writer had in mind.

Judging by what has been said about the upcoming film, I can honestly say that this is going to be twice as good as the last film and twice as explosive and adventurous.

As to who Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is, the clues have been given issues one, four, and twelve. His character is definitely not going to be Khan Noonian Singh. Dennis Bailey’s speculations on the TREK BBS thread about Cumberbatch being Khan, as well as various other fan speculations, are both undoubtedly and unquestionably incorrect. A very loose conclusion drawn without any solid facts and hard evidence(just because someone who has written for Star Trek before doesn’t mean that they have all access to huge secrets – unless of course they had friends in high places at Paramount, which is highly unlikely).

My guess is that Benedict is going to play one of the following two. Jim Kirk’s brother Samuel or Gary Mitchell. We already know why Gary Mitchell(assuming if it is him)would wreak havoc within the internal corridors of power in both the Federation and Starfleet infastructures. If it should be Sam Kirk, this will present a very interesting and frightening dynamic. An angle that will not only add texture and an extra dimension to the film, but also to the characters of Kirk and crew, themselves. Mostly, Jim Kirk.

All that aside, we’ll just have to wait and see what will happen in May of 2013. Six months from now.

  7. Correction conclusions given in issues one, four, and twelve of the Star Trek Ongoing Comic Book series from IDW. Sorry for the typo/omission.

  8. Maybe devastated was the word the writer was looking for.

All that aside, judging by the description of the synopsis and Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in the film, I’m willing to bet that the character he will be playing will be none other than one of the two. It will be either Gary Mitchell or Jim Kirk’s brother Sam. Clues had been given in the IDW Star Trek Ongoing comic series issues one, four, and twelve. When you narrow it down to those levels(taking into account the synopsis description about Kirk and family), the villain can be either one of those two characters.

There is no way that the villain is Khan Noonian Singh. For starters(judging by the BTS photos), Benedict Cumberbatch does not even remotely look Indian. Dennis Bailey’s speculations on the TREK BBS, as well as other fans, are just only that. Conclusions that are very loose and drawn without any specific facts. Unless they had friends in high places who have access to the powers that be at Paramount and the final shooting script(chances are they didn’t – even someone who has written for Star Trek would not have lucked out with such a scenario), the chances of Cumberbatch playing the late and ill-fated 20th Century product of genetic engineering are an absolute zero.

All that aside, if it is Gary Mitchell, we already have an idea as to what his motivations are. If it is Sam Kirk, we can only guess as to why Jim Kirk’s brother would go rogue and wreak havoc within both the Federation and Starfleet infastructures. Should Sam Kirk be the villain, this will present an interesting and unique challenge for Kirk and the Enterprise crew. Not to mention the corridors of power within Starfleet and the UFP.

For their is nothing more frightening and devastating than having to confront ones brother(or other family member)who has gone rogue and wrecked utter devastation and mindless destruction.

Either way, we’ll know the outcome in six months.

  9. Agreed the press release is very poorly written. “Unstoppable force of terror”? “Love will be challenged”? A “warzone world”? “Detonated”? “chess game of life and death”? Sounds like some high school journalist reaching for cliches and coming up short.

“Only family he has left”? What happened to his mother and brother?

  10. Boy, you people think of everything bad under the sun to say about Star Trek’s savior! It’s no wonder Star Trek and its fandom is turning into something as bad as a snobbish social club, run by pernicious vermin and redneck mentalities.

If there is a force of terror from within(one that is stoppable in this case)it is the following descriptions: JB, MB, DRB, VM, STC, SF, and FF.

    Unbelievable!

  11. Peace and tranquility, my friend. I did not mean to blaspheme against the savior. JJ is gentle, we are one with the body. Festival!!!
